Japan 1976

Hi, Sue

You are looking for 1976 Japan concert , not 1974. Right?
And probably the video you saw on YouTube was the Osaka 1976 concert.

Live in Osaka 1976 Concert

This is not a proffesional video. It was shot by just one camera.
Some staff of the show might have shot this show, just for the record.

Carpenters visited Japan 3 times (1972, 1974, and 1976).
1972 & 1974 concerts were broadcasted, but 1976 concert was not.
So, there are not any other video of the 1976 Japan concert.
"Live in Osaka 1976 Concert" is the only footage of 1976 Japan.

If you know "iOffer", you can find the DVD of this show.
The video quality of the DVD might be a little bit better than YouTube.
But, again, you cannot get a crystal claear video...

Well, I heard that you want a clear video.
Then here is another "official" DVD of the concerts.

Carpenters Live on Stage 1972-1974 NEW DVD

It looks like a bootleg DVD, but it's not. This is an "official" DVD.
The publisher "TC Entertainment" is a company in Japan, not a bootlegger.
The strange thing is, Richard is not involved with this DVD release!
This may be the case tomswift2002 wrote.
(DVD release does not need Richard's permission...)

Anyway, The video quality is superb, and still available.
But, you must remember one thing. This DVD is "Region 2".
You must get a "Region free DVD player", or set your PC drive to "Region 2".
If you don't understand what the "DVD Region" is, I do not recommend this DVD.

Carpenters did so many concerts in so many countries.
EVERY concert was recorded by Richard.
Some are proffesional recordings, but most of them were made by his cassete tape recorder.
Because Richard & Karen wanted to check the quality of EVERY performance.

When they came to Japan, they took a train to move.
On the train, they were listening to the last night concert on a cassete tape player.
And they had big warnings from the conducter, because they played too loud!
Those casette tapes are still kept in Richard's house.
You can see the picture of his cassete collection in this documentary.
(Note: the link in the thread is dead.
But, you can find by googling the Japanese title "アナザーストーリーズ 日本人が愛したカーペンターズ".)

NEW Japanese Documentary

You can see so many cassete tapes...
But, Richard has no interest of releasing them. Why?
I think that the studio recordings are only valuable for him.
And live recordings are just the copy of them.
So, there is no need to release the "copy".
Yes, Japan & UK live recordings were released.
It's because of the HUGE requests from the fans in Japan & UK.
This is just my thought.

Yes! This is what I've always thought. Richard has said he doesn't like live recordings. I don't either, so I can understand where he's coming from. And all of the songs that they did in concert, they *mostly* also recorded in the studio, so to Richard's way of thinking, why would anyone want an inferior copy?

Of course I know that many fans like to watch their heroes in action and live concert recordings are a way to do that, so I understand the desire to see and hear these old shows. I say be thankful for what we've already gotten, and that we live in an age where people can share their videos on the Internet.

This sounds pretty accurate and logical to me. He must have a lot of live recordings on tape. We look at it from a personal aspect where we would like everything they recorded. However Richard looks at it from business aspect which is why we will probably never hear anybody those live recordings or any other live DVDs. I thought that the Live on Stage was a bootleg, thanks for clearing that one up.

Thank you Lotus your post is really helpful and yes it is the 1976 one I wanted a better view of. I like to see the live concerts because I find it truely amazing hearing Karen sing live. In my youth I was a bit of a disco/electronic fan and never really got into collecting the Carpenters LP's although I did buy some of their singles. I soooooo regret not appreciating their gift whilst they were still actively performing.

This DVD is definitely worth having. It's great! Very clear. I bought a couple of copies from Amazon.co.jp when it was first released. I saw it in Tower Records and other stores when I was in Tokyo in late 2015. I thought it couldn't exactly be a bootleg because it was being sold through such reputable stores but wondered if it was 100 percent legitimate. The DVD includes sections of the 1972 Australian broadcast, the 1974 broadcast from Holland and the 1974 Belgian broadcast. (I think that's right). It is magnificent to have this footage available!!

It's certainly unauthorized, so I guess you could consider it a bootleg.

Also, you have to understand that a Blu-ray disc can exist with standard definition material mastered onto it. And any of these 70s videotaped performances will NEVER be in high definition. They were shot with video cameras. Even the best TV series of the 70s like ALL IN THE FAMILY and MAUDE and GOOD TIMES and CAROL BURNETT were all shot with video cameras onto videotape. The best resolution you'll ever get out of them is 480i - and you're lucky if you can get them that high.

Film is the only medium that can be turned into true high def, provided that you have access to the original film elements.

So while this may indeed be a 1080p Blu-ray, the best it can contain of these programs is 480i content, that will look just about as bad as if you videotaped them yourself and played them on your VCR. With care and some software, not exactly the hallmark of bootleggers, you might coax a 480i picture into looking "not awful". It'll never be great.

At least the audio is in uncompressed PCM stereo.

But seriously, that Japan 1972 program looks like it might've been mastered from a kinescope, unless they managed to get a hold of an actual 2-inch or 3/4-inch U-matic videotape master. I mean, what are "Commercial 1", "Commercial 2", "Commercial 3"? I've got some DVD's of 1950's TV shows that feature the old commercials, so there are film prints out there with the original commercials. But with Kinescope, it's film, so it could be scanned at HD, but kinescopes were made from placing a camera in front of a TV screen and recording the broadcast image onto 35, 16 or 8mm film.

uncompressed PCM stereo

Uncompressed mush is still mush.

Just because a kinescope is film only means that a high-def version would have you looking at that old CRT TV screen with little loss. Like the audio, high-def mush is still mush.

Would be good if someone had actually seen this blu ray and can comment just how good the quality may be?, I'm not going to buy it, as I think it may be as Harry suggests not that good quality wise.

Is there anyway to edit my posts photobucket has now gone the subscription route to host images therefore all my images have disappeared until I find another free image hosting site I cannot get them back

Wow, I didn't know that. Looks like I've lost all my images as well then

If you feel your images are of value, simply re-post them from another hosting site. Some of us have switched to IMGUR, others to IBB, or FLICKR.

Photobucket's actions have caused ripples all through the online discussion communities.

So back to Japan 1974 @ BUDOKAN. I recently watched a program called Discovering Carpenters and it had a couple of clips with no Japanese subtitles but I understood they couldnt be removed? Is it possible and if so is it only the big TV companies that have the technology?
When I bought the DVD recently from Japan it said no subtitles but ofcourse it came with them. Strange!

Sorry, on the DVD I bought from Japan there were subtitles even though on the website it said the DVD had "no subtitles"

On the TV program "Discovering Carpenters" there were clips of the same concert but no subtitles, so I wondered if there was a way to remove them?

I've seen some of the clips on YouTube with subtitles. I don't really find it all that distracting... is it really that big of a deal to people? It's not like the subtitles run over Richard and Karen's faces, after all! Also, I wanted to add that I think any kind of changes or overdubbing, regardless of who has changed the existing concerts affects the integrity of the live performance. I would rather see a live performance for what it is/was, warts and all. I know they sought perfection, but its those little imperfections that remind me that they weren't perfect super humans and that's okay. Makes them more relatable as humans.

It seems from this (somewhat amusing) English translation that the listing does detail the restoration of each concert: New Release DVD > CARPENTERS/LIVE IN JAPAN ANTHOLOGY < 1BLU-RAY DISC BDR >

It seems that in detailing the '72 concert, 'rough' TV quality recording for broadcast means that that concert is the lowest quality of the bunch and probably from a videotape.
From what I can understand, the 1976 concert at least had something to do with 'film' and not videotape; it states it was sourced from a 'collectable'' source. Likely the best version you could get, surely better than VHS or Beta copies

It sounds like the 76 concert might've been recorded on someone's Super 8 or 16 film camera.

This is just my thought.
There is also the possibility that the video of the performance of "There's A Kind of Hush" found on YOM/Gold DVD is a snippet of an entire concert filmed on that day. Didn't they also tour Japan in the Fall of 1970? I seem to recall Karen mentioning that during her closing remarks on the 1972 broadcast as well as being mentioned on one of the recent Japanese documentaries.

So it calls the 1976 recording a 'ワンカメ・ショット', or one-camera shot. So it was filmed by one single professional camera (at best) or a single camcorder. Maybe this was the night and video seen in online Osaka videos or YOM/Gold DVD.
