A&M Innersleeves: 1970 era

A friend just asked me what sleeve might be used in the first pressing of Tea For The Tillerman. That was released in 1970. Would this have been one of the "Preserving The Sound..." sleeves? He has two copies, and the innersleeve in one of those copies was similar to a newspaper, called "The Inner Sleeve."

We'll be adding an innersleeve feature soon, but I wanted to toss this out there before I forgot. :D

I can't say with any authority at all. My copy of TEA FOR THE TILLERMAN on LP is a radio station copy. It's got innersleeve #6a with the dog on one side.

This could be a reissue - it could have been switched. I have no real idea. But I like the idea of an innersleeve gallery.

That era was using the orange "Adam & Eve" statuette ones. At least that's what most of my A&Ms from that era have.

False alarm on one of the copies: it was a Columbia innersleeve.

I agree on the swapping of sleeves too--it is a crap shoot when you buy used vinyl. Covers, sleeves and records could be interchanged by a dealer to make one good set.

The Dog sleeve inside an SP 4280 had to be a reissue or post-mid-1973 A&M release. What I'd love to find is one of those "4-color" catalogs that was advertised in the late '60s. These were supposed to have cover art for unreleased projects, such as SP 4231 (Children of God) and 4226 (Milkwood). Sure wish I had ordered one from the label as a kid.

If I ever find one on eBay, I'd scan it and post the whole thing here. :agree:

Was the Ansel Adams "Preserve the Sound Outside" series happening in the early '70s, or was it later? I have a Sergio Mendes STILLNESS with that sleeve (that hasn't been swapped). But I have about 3 or 4 LPs of that album so it might be a later pressing.

I think so. My old original, store-bought STILLNESS has that b&w Ansel Adams innersleeve, and it just felt right to have that sleeve in that album.

Did the Japanese put a little innersleeve paper in their mini-LP version?

The Ansel Adams ones followed the Adam and Eve ones -- around 71/72 judging by the records I own. Most of the ones from this era I was finding "still-sealed" when I started collecting A&M in 1972/3
  10. LP Jim: Don't feel too bad. I ordered one of the four-color booklets as a kid...and it never showed up. To this day, I've never even seen one.
  11. Mr. Bill's right: The Ansel Adams "Preserve The Sound Outside" sleeves followed the "Adam and Eve". 1971 and possibly late 1970. My brain keeps nudging me, saying that I first saw the Ansel sleeve in my copy of Stillness.

I had a bunch of those. I must've written in for one every couple of months. I think I still have them in a box somewhere in my mystery closet.

  13. Capt.: Maybe you got mine! :) If you can ever scan and post one, I'd love to see what it looked like.

Yeah, well, you know the stories about postal workers... :)

Same here. I did get the two posters of Herb they were selling for a couple of bucks after Warm came out, but that involved actually sending in money as oppposed to a request for a free booklet. Hey, Cap'n, when you go searching in your mystery closet, see if you can find my postcard from Gadsden, Alabama, ca. 1970.

Wish I still had those posters, but they appear to have gone down the remorseless gullet of time.

Here are the two sides of a much earlier innerleeve.

Which is one of my favorite ones--from when A&M Records 1st came out!

I have seen at least one A&M Records catalog & there were more than just Four Colors--too bad it quickly disappeared just as there was as much debate as to whether it was for sale (it was at a record store I was briefly working at) as was my willingness to buy it with one of the Mort Garson Astrolological-Series LP's (LEO, actually) cut out of it...

And yes, the Children Of God album is featured, as well as Jimmy Cliff's Wonderful World, Beautiful People (have never seen an actual A&M of that one; only know it was on Island), track lists, and all!

The Spirit & Worm and Milkwood albums are represented there, too, I believe...!

The closest I had to seeing--and obtaining--my fav' era of A&M in-print; Summertime was Herb Alpert's latest wax at that time, too!
