A&M Singles Box Set - A&M HISTORY 100*

The title is all the information they have on Dusty Groove right now. I can't wait to see a track listing--it will be interesting to see if they go for popular titles, or rarities, or both.

I wonder what label it'll be on. Hip-O Select is my first thought (due to Univeral's ties to A&M).

I don't understand this box at all, really. There's not a Herb Alpert track in there that I could find. No Janet Jackson, no Carpenters, yet there are two Cat Stevens, two Billy Prestons, two Gino Vanellis, etc.

The mind reels with unrealized possibilities -- IF this track list and my guesses are accurate.

With Herb pulling his masters out of Universal, I figured that none of his tracks would appear in the set. And a similar situation with Carpenters: Universal probably could not get permission to use those tracks in the set either. And, that could be the same for other artists who don't show up. A licensing mess, in other words. If Rhino (the OLD Rhino) had a hand in it, you can bet all A&M artists would have been represented--they did a good job rounding up tracks for their Bacharach box.

I'd still get this one if the price were reasonable--it's still a great way to get a lot of A&M singles all in one place.

Taking Mike's lead, I've finished a bit more of the puzzle.

A few more clues:

#61 is "Bloody Well Right" by Supertramp

#49 is "Don't Touch Me There" by The Tubes

#55 is "Part of the Union" by The Strawbs

#54 is correct

#22 is Alessi (not sure if its Brothers or not)

#25 is Captain & Tenille, but didn't find a hit single remotely close to that title.

#34: heck if I know! :D

The Bacharach "Wives & Lovers" track was never issued on a U.S. single--I wondered if it was some other song, but again, found nothing remotely close to it among his single releases. I wonder if they are considering U.S. or worldwide singles on this set, too.

So, updating the list with Rudy's info, figuring out the mysterious #4 and #34, and taking it out of the quote box for better readability, we get:

I didn't realize the original "Hurting Each Other" was on A&M.

Nice job filling in the blanks guys. Proving once again, the depth of knowledge here is awesome!

That Capt & Tennille track is a stumper though.

Harry: #28 is a valid single by Blue Haze.

The Bacharach entry doesn't make sense: none of his other singles come close for either the A or B side, and "W&L" wasn't released as a single, even overseas. I wonder, though: was the pre-A&M version of "W&L" ever released on a single? (It would have been on Kapp.) That might have been a goof if it ended up on this set. Just throwing out ideas here. Via the translation, though, "W&L" is almost the only logical choice!

"Morning Has Broken" is the most logical choice IMHO for the questioned Cat Stevens single.

And like Mike says, the Captain & Tenille is another stumper...again, I couldn't find anything close among their singles.

What was fun was reading the phonetic Japanese version of English, repeating it to one's self and trying to make it sound like something familiar in English. Although I'm really baffled by the phrase, "...cybernetic Anthropomorphic Machine..." that popped up twice in the list!

On the C&T entry, maybe they used a bit of a lyric for a subtitle, such as in "Lonely Night (Angel Face)" and then used that in this list for the actual title. Even thinking along those lines, I still draw a blank. I haven't listened to any C&T in quite a while though, so no surprise there.

Also - was the Bacharach "Wives and Lovers" on Kapp the same arrangement as the A&M? That's one of my favorite arrangements of his.

It's amazing the Japanese lyric sheets come out as well as they do, given the "translations" on this list!

Hey Mike: "W&L" on A&M is a very different arrangement. It was rewritten since, IIRC, they were a bit embarrased by the slightly chauvinistic orientation of the lyrics. The Kapp version is similar to the version Jack Jones recorded. If you have the "Something Big" box set, it's on the first CD.

Okay, guys, Being over here these almost all made sense to me. I'm sure Yokosuka Mike understood most of them, too. While I'm nowhere near being able to speak a word of Japanese other than "Thank You" (Domo Arigato), "yes" (Hai), No (iie), Japanese is a very "structural" language (and has three written forms which are often blended together).

Like Harry said, repeating it to yourself over and over phonetically you get the artist or song title. But the structure in general is each character represents a consonant and vowel. So there's a "letter" for Sa, Se, Si, So and Su and again for Ra, Re, Ri, Ro and Ru and so on. There's a few Consonant-vowel-consonant ones and vowel-consonant-vowel ones. SO I'm stationed at Yokosuka -- Yo Ko Su Ka. "U" is a silent version of our upside down "e" thing in the dictionary so it's Not YO-ko-SUU-kuh, it's Yo-KO s-kah.

Because of this sound construction and the lack of the "L" sound, you get phonetic spellings of Tim Curry as "Teimu Kurie" or Suitcase as "sutsukesu" or every American's favorite "Mukudonaredus" (McDonald's). It's as American as "apurupai" (Apple Pie)

This one is odd and I wonder if it's just a poor parameter in a translator program... THe word being replaced is "Comes." And I can only think of one definition of that word that "comes" close to describing a robotic self aware or actualizingf machine. But you'll notice the lack of "L" with "Arong" for "Along" here...

For #83, there is no single release with that name--is it even a Chris Montez song? It doesn't sound familiar.

What's really odd about this list is the way certain titles are alphabetized. Look at the first ten titles. Eight of them begin with the letter "I". Look at the ones in the 70s - again, eight out of ten begin with the letter "L". There's a string of seven "P" titles in the high thirties, lower forties.

I wonder if they're in some kind of Japanese alpha order?

This could just be a song listing--it may not be in the final running order. I'm sure once the date gets closer, or if Dusty Groove gets their stock in (they'll be stocking it, by the way), we'll have a true track list broken down by disc.
