Talk about going out with a bang! Art Blakey delivered the goods on this outing, only to pass away a few months afterwards. The group is solid throughout and the arrangements really swing. Trombonist Steve Davis stands out on his own "One For All", my favorite track. Another strong tune is one of my all-time favorite ballads "Polkadots And Moonbeams" with a gorgeous tenor solo by Dale Barlow. Bu even gets in some strong drum work on "Logarhythms". Definitely a CD worth getting!

Did you ever wonder if it was a plot? Wes Montgomery's last album was for A&M. So was Art Blakey's. And weren't a few others as well? :D
  4. Captain Bacardi Administrator

Yep. Stan Getz's last studio album (Apasionado) was on A&M. Sun Ra and Gerry Mulligan also passed after their A&M releases, but I'll have to check on those dates.
  5. Captain Bacardi Administrator

Okay, I was off a bit. Sun Ra died in 1993 (4 years after his last A&M release) and Mulligan in 1996.

"A&M. -- A jazz-great's last stop before heading to the big gig in the sky..."

(Hey -- it beats my first draft: "A&M -- Where jazz greats go to die."
