Concert Review: Blood, Sweat & Tears

On Friday night Kathy & I saw Blood, Sweat & tears perform at the One World Theater here in Austin. They call themselves BS&T but there's not one original member in the band. Bobby Colomby, who was the original drummer is now the manager of the group and changes personnel every now and then. So at $80 per ticket we saw a really good cover band.

That said, the group played great. They covered all the hits and opened up some tunes for some jazz solos. One notable solo was from the piano player on "Smiling Faces", where the horn players, guitarist and singer left the stage while a jazz trio jammed. It was an incredible performance. The guitarist was solid as well.

The band also played a few tunes from other artists, such as Weather Report's "Havona", Jeff Lorber's "Surreptitious" (a hip feature for the horn section) and the Talking Heads' "Burning Down The House", which was the final tune before the inevitable encore of "You've Made Me So Very Happy", with a nice trombone solo at the end.

One note: the vocalist - who's name I forget - is the vocalist behind the Pokemon Theme, something he joked about a couple of times throughout the night and apologized for as well. He was an energetic singer, but just didn't have the raw energy that David Clayton Thomas or Al Cooper had. Still, it was an enjoyable show.

I suppose that's the norm for us old geezers who remember the original iterations of many groups such as BS&T, Chicago, Jefferson Airplane/Starship and especially our beloved Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66.

I saw BS&T in 1969 or '70 up in Flint, Michigan in their original David Clayton-Thomas form and again in about 1980 in Detroit, after Clayton-Thomas rejoined the band. If my memory serves me correctly, the opening act in '69 was Don McLean, who had charted a minor hit with 'Castles in the Air' and a major one later with 'American Pie'.

I saw David Clayton Thomas in his last year with the band. Sorry to say, his voice was shot.

BS&T & Al Kooper are among my top 10 all time faves....
