I have this album somewhere here in my pad, but in cassette form. Must say that this album is wonderful! Very innovative, daring, and forward looking. It's "free", but not in the Ornette/Cecil type of "free jazz", but it looks(or sounds) like Del Barrio thought and planned this out, then decided to improvise on what he had done.Dianne Reeves' vocals were very lovely(as usual) on LAMENT, and Charlie Haden, Pete Erskine, and Abe Laboriel really rose to the occasion in their playing on this album.

I remember when I worked at a record store in the early 90s, one of my co-workers;a real pain in the gluteus maximus jazz elitist, who hated ANYTHING to do with contemporary jazz, looked at the credits and was SHOCKED that the great Charlie Haden would play on anything that Herb Alpert produced! "Herb Alpert must've paid Charlie Haden a LOT of money to appear on this", he muttered. Like Rick Nelson once sang,"You can't please everyone".

I also remember when this album came out, Herb gave an interview to JazzTimes magazine, saying that Oscar Peterson called him up to rave about the record! Now, that my friends is high praise;coming from one master(Peterson) to two others(Alpert and Del Barrio).

    I give this album:five stars!

After joining the Corner in 1997, this album came up for discussion, being mentioned as a "produced by Herb Alpert" effort. I seem to have acquired a CD copy of this one - it probably came from the used record store in Ardmore, PA, where I used to spend lunch hours browsing the racks for something interesting on which to spend money. This copy I have has the word "PROMOTIONAL" hard-printed onto the face of the disc.

I recall maybe listening to this one time and thinking that it really was OK. I'd liked del Barrio's association with Herb on UNDER A SPANISH MOON and MY ABSTACT HEART, so while jazz is not my forté, I can listen to this more as background than anything else.

Checking around, I see that while officially out-of-print at this point in time, the album is still fairly obtainable at reasonable prices.

I bought this CD when the longbox was still around and Oscar Peterson's comments were on a sticker on the box. High praise indeed!

Overall, I enjoy this album. There were a few misses, though. "Lament For A Lonely Child" really didn't do much for me. And there were some moments on the "Three Freedom Movements" that had some lackluster moments. But I really dug "Chaca-Raca" (my favorite cut) and "Cubana". Most of this album was totally improvised so there's a lot to be said for this excursion. I even thought there was some heavy Chick Corea influence splashed throughout the album. This is one of those albums that wasn't a big commerical success but a very creative effort that made A&M a much-loved label.
