The ninth Tijuana Brass album, HERB ALPERT'S NINTH, has finally been released on CD for the first time ever! Be sure to vote for your favorite track, and place your comments here.

I enjoy "My Heart Belongs To Daddy"--a great Kick-Off Track for MUSIC-BOX SAMPLER and sure wish it could have made it onto a '45'... ("A Banda" did, instead)

This is (together with 'The Brass are Comin') my favorite Herb Alpert-album.
Born in 1958 I wasn't part of the first 'wave', but in 1969 I heard this album when we visited some neighbours - they had a recordplayer!! Lasted another two years before my parents bought one....
From then on I was hooked on Herb Alpert, and so this record stands out and is connected with many nice memories. And the music of course is great. My favorite is 'Bud'.
Today I am fortunate enough to have a signed copy of the album together with Herb's handwritten greetings - it all comes full circle..

By the way - this is my first post at the A&M Corner Forum, but I have been an eager reader for a very long time. Thanks to all you fans and experts who give a lot of information here!!

Welcome aboard, and thanks for finally deciding to post here!

A second welcome to our oldie "newbie"! Join in the fun - we don't bite (well most of us anyway - watch out for the Captain!)

NINTH is another welcome addition to the collection - finally digital after all these years. My favorite has to be "Carmen" - a charting single that's never before been available on CD. The run-through of the "Carmen" melody in differing TjB styles is a true tour-de-force. And with the new liner notes, we now know that "Carmen" was recorded in New York with Phil Ramone doing the engineering duties.

Second favorite would be either "A Banda" or "Love So Fine", with honorable mention going to "Flea Bag".

I once put Carmen on a CD--it may have been a needle drop of this album, in fact. I used CD Architect to put index markers at each different point in the song--I think I came up with five or six.

My favorite (unvoted right now) would be a toss-up between "A Banda", "Love So Fine" and "Carmen".

I have Ninth on LP vinyl and love it. I've been waiting a long, long time for this little gem. I love the entire album. My favorite cut is "Bud". I'll love this cut even more now that I know how it came to be.

Can't wait to hear My Heart Belongs to Daddy.

Does anyone get the feeling that Herb tried to recreate the magic of “Carmen” with his “Latin Medley” on Fandango? Or, maybe it’s just my imagination, running away with me.

Frankly, I enjoy both medleys immensely, but for 9th, my favorite song is “Love So Fine”; which I’m still listening to on my needle drop CD-R copy.

Yes, I’m still sitting by the mailbox waiting…

i just got my copy today, and listened to it 3times. i love this album and i am so glad to finally have it on cd

"Love So Fine." What is it about that song? I just LOVE it.

Count me in as a happy camper to have this CD, too.

This CD sounds a lot better than my LPs! I hear a few more subtle sounds, some crisp highs. I also notice a bit of a tape "gurgle" at the end of "Trolley Song", but that's a minor glitch. It was also nice to hear the guitar on "Bud" towards the end, instead of my LPs hiss and crackles! I chose "The Love Nest" as my favorite tune - I just love the samba rhythm and the horn solo - followed closely by "My Heart Belongs To Daddy" and "Flea Bag".

Of Ninth I could say, maybe more than of the other albums, that there's a perfect song on here for almost every mood I can imagine feeling:

For sentiment, there's "The Trolley Song."
For chipper, there's "Flea Bag."
For feelin' groovy, "The Happening."
For goofiness, "Carmen."

And so it goes. Each track makes such a definite statement, yet a remarkably different statement for a surprisingly cohesive album.

Finally I opted for melancholy, haunting "'Bud,'" a beautiful tribute to Ervan Coleman, who from all reports was a beautiful human being. When Pisano—I guess it's Pisano—escorts the song to its exit on solo guitar, it tears my heart out.

I think the audio quality of the Ninth album is the best and most impressive so far, on all of the reissues. The sound on "Carmen" is fantastic. A great piece of record engineering, really coming to its' right in the digital version.

After a second listen to the CD I realize now that I didn't fully appreciate "Carmen" the first time around, when I was younger. Apparently I didn't "get" the arrangement in the way I understand it now. It's freakin' brilliant!!! :D

MY GOD!! This is the first time in 38 YEARS I've heard Carmen. I had such a lousy stereo in 1967 that I had no idea it sounded soooo good and was so damned hard to play!! I'm breathless! .....and I agree, this sound on this album is the BEST so far!!

This is my fav HA recording, tying it with "Warm". The artwork alone does it for me. I hope the CD has a good facsimile of the back cover of the L.P. That photo collage is great. When this album was originally released I was hoping A&M would sell that HA sweater! To this day, I would love to have a sweater like that, but I really like that front cover, very, very cool one! It's almost as good as the "Whipped Cream" cover.
"Love So Fine", "Bud", "Love Nest", "Daddy", and "Carmen" are incredible tracks. In 1967 I did not care for the tempo Herb used on "Trolley Song", but now I feel it was a brilliant decision. Kudos to Herb Alpert for giving the people what they have wanted for the longest. Feels like Christmas in August!

After listening to this reissue twice, here are my 5 favourite tracks from "Herb Alpert's Ninth":

A Banda
The Trolley Song
The Happening
Love So Fine
Carmen

I concur. Whatever the reason—perhaps the masters for this one were in better shape—Ninth sounds unbelievably fresh.

Anyone else out there admire what Herb is doing with strings on many of this album's tracks? The violins on "Love So Fine" give it that top-down-wind-in-your-hair feeling. Those on "Cowboys and Indians" sound like quizzical cats. And the celli and bass fiddles on "Flea Bag" remind me of George Martin's production of "Eleanor Rigby" on the same era's Revolver.

I liked the song "Love So Fine" as my favorite. The song "Cowboys And Indians" reminds me of "Marching Thru Madrid" & "Mexican Road Race" almost wrapped into one. The tribute song "Bud" is a close second for me. Matt Clark Sanford, MI
