I was not paying attention and let my inbox become full. The next thing I know several precious communications about a deceased friend dropped off. Are these permanently deleted?

Not to doubt you, but how could you have a full inbox when today is the day you joined?

Sorry but I don't understand where you get that.

Below is my page 4 of my private message inbox.

So is there some way for me to recoup old messages that are no longer there?

While you are today a member of A&M Corner, your signup date as a user is yesterday afternoon, Aug 11, 2010. You could not possibly have a full inbox with messages from July of this year as "colonelmoore" was not a registered member then.

Now, if you have a second log-in with a full inbox that's another matter entirely - and something we frown on. Each user is entitled to one login and one login only.

    Harry,

It says to the left of my posts on this forum that I joined June 23rd.

    Thanks.

My error on reading the dates - sorry about that.

But still. You joined 50 days ago - and your Private Message Inbox is full? You've only made three public posts on the forum - all in this thread.

In answer to your question, I don't think there's any way of retrieving messages that purge out.

  7. Is lurking not okay? While I participate semi-regularly, I wasn't aware that lurking was a cardinal sin. Did I miss something?

Ed, your participation is quite fine. Certainly lurking is a part of any Forum, with people curious about a particular subject but perhaps too shy to attempt to contribute. That's all well and good.

My question here is about an individual who's NEVER posted until now, but has a full Inbox problem after only 50 days as a member. Obviously he's made contact with one or more other members - enough so to fill an Inbox quickly.

It just seems a little odd to me.

OK so as to reduce the mystery of it all, I was searching using Google for friends of a dying friend and I found his name on one item posted here. I registered and sent him private email as this was the only way to contact him. He had not posted since 2005 so needless to say he was surprised.

We just got in the habit of using this private message facility. We had no reason to change until I discovered that it was dropping our old communications. Now we use regular email.

    Ah. Perfectly understandable.

Sorry the message function prunes, but it's a necessary space-saving feature.

    My condolences on your friend.

    Harry
