Laurence "Lol" Tolhurst, a founding member of The Cure, is on a nation wide tour in support of his recently published memoir.
One of the stops was at Grimey's Too, a nearby annex of Grimey's Records, a popular new and used music outlet in Nashville TN. I was part of a small but enthusiastic group who dropped in Tuesday evening to chat, get a signed copy of "Cured" and a few vintage album sleeves signed as well.
Tolhurst, who played drums and later keyboards, was in the band from it's beginning in 1976 until 1989. He and Singer Robert Smith were childhood friends. The book, which I look forward to reading, discusses the ups and downs of the music and touring business. A bout with alcoholism lead to his being fired, getting caught up in lawsuits and eventual reconcilation with band mates.
The Cure's early post punk phase is documented on A&M by its reissue of FAITH and SEVENTEEN SECONDS on a double LP, HAPPILY EVER AFTER, in 1981 along with PORNOGRAPHY (SP 4902) in 1982. A move toward more pop oriented and accessible music brought a move to the Elektra label, which reissued PORNOGRAPHY in 1985.
After a stop in Memphis Tolhurst will return home to L.A. and perhaps visit other towns as interest in the book picks up. Fans of either of the Cure's music phases and history of the music scene in this era should find Mr. Tolhurst's story interesting.
