Odd choice of comparisons on "Pais Tropical" ad

I found this old Billboard ad some time ago:

It strikes me as at least a little odd that one of the keyboardists mentioned that Sergio is supposedly joining the ranks of is evidently (Dave) Michaels of H.P. Lovecraft. I understand Elton John and Keith Emerson, who were huge then, but Dave seems like a really weird choice for 1971-72. Or is there another Michaels I just haven't thought of?

I have a feeling that's referring to Lee Michaels who was also signed to A&M.

I had thought of that, but had thought Lee was still too "new" and with only one real hit to his name for him to be held up as the sort of "high-falutin" star that Sergio was supposedly now "finally" able to join the ranks of.
  4. Remember this is an A&M ad, so I'm sure they meant Lee Michaels - the weird thing to me is that his playing on this album would be compared to those players. However, put it in perspective....his albums weren't selling particularly well at this point (ironically, if we knew what those numbers were, whatever this album sold would probably land him in 2011's Billboard Top 20 - but I digress).

So they were doing anything to portray him as cool. pop. accessible, etc.

Oh, come on, Elton John had lots of extended Dorian solos on D and Eb.
