Other versions of "So Many People"

I've been listening a lot to Pais Tropical again lately, and decided to do a little search for So Many People and was really surprised to see 3 other versions on YouTube. Most interesting is the inclusion of a Billy Mendes on The Neighborhood's version, which seems to be the first recording of the tune out there.

I remember the first time I played "So Many People" when I got the PAIS TROPICAL album, I would have sworn that Lani Hall was singing lead on that one, and then later on "Gone Forever", never realizing then how much Karen Philipp could sound like Lani.

I'm not surprised that other artists also attempted the song. At that point in time, Nichols-Williams were a very hot songwriting team.

  3. There are several other versions on YouTube as well - one by David Canary, who was an actor on "All My Children" for many many years....but this one is my favorite - it's a Japanese artist from 1972, I think - and during the first chorus, he actually says "so many peeper and all in a hurry". You gotta love it.

There are a few more *ahem* examples of that in the song also. I wonder if he sang the song phonetically (as Lani has done with Portuguese) or actually knows English.

Actually, while it isn't "So Many People", another Roger Nichols song (this with Tony Asher) is covered by a Norwegian group, Liv Tor & The Four Jets (who even copy the instrumental break from the Small Circle of Friends version):

Next, there is this very dated version by a group called The Match:

Finally, an awkward version by one of the Rat Pack:

The things you find on YouTube!!
