Public Broadcasting Exclusive: Carpenters The Complete Singles Release

Mine showed up on the "pending" side for the full amount with yesterday's date.

I emailed our local PBS station and was told they have not yet decided on the pledge drive for December yet, and to try back in late September.

Is it coincidence that this show 'Remembering the Carpenters' is premiering on Sky TV in the UK this coming week? and will it be accompanied by this record collection being released ?

Japan must have issued several different covers for the single, Bless The Beasts And Children because this is not the cover that appeared in the Japan Single Box. This is a Japan 45 rpm cover and yet another take of the new DVD cover being released soon.

The Complete Singles Album Representation: By The Numbers

I was looking at the playlist for the forthcoming Carpenters Complete Singles collection (A&B sides), and I wondered about album representation, so I took the liberty of counting the 66 songs in the collection, related to the albums on which they appear, and then I ranked the album representation from most to least, including numbers of songs and percentage represented on the new collection (note: my math may not be completely accurate, so I welcome input - I had a busy toddler on my knee when I was doing most of my calculations!). Any surprises?
  1. Passage: 7/8 (87%)
  2. Made In America: 8/10 (80%)
  3. A Song For You: 9/12 (75%) (not counting “Song For You" reprise)
  4. A Kind Of Hush: 7/10 (70%)
  5. Carpenters: 6/10 (60%)
  6. Horizon: 6/10 (60%)
  7. Close To You: 5/12 (42%)
  8. Voice Of The Heart: 4/10 (40%)
  9. Offering/Ticket To Ride: 4/13 (30%)
  10. Now & Then: 4/14 (28%) (counting medley as separate songs and not counting “Yesterday Once More" reprise)
  11. Lovelines: 3/12 (25%)
  12. Christmas Portrait: 2/17 (11%)
  13. An Old-Fashioned Christmas 1/14 (.07%)

Now that's a very nice picture.

Passage: 7/8 (87%)

I would consider PASSAGE a nine-track album with "On the Balcony..." its own track. Therefore, it would be 7/9 (77%), since that "track" wasn't on a single. One could also argue that with the shortening of "Calling Occupants...", even less of the album appeared on singles.

But really, it is surprising that THAT much of PASSAGE found its way to 45s.

Harry

Exactly, when you put it like this in ratios, I also can't believe Passage had that many U.S. tracks on the singles it's practically the entire album.

Nice job, would you mind doing the same chart for the Japan Singles, here is the link with those tracks.

Okay, here’s how the Japanese Singles Box plays out. Again, I invite others to correct my math. I was an English major, and it’s been a long day. :)

Bottom line: the Japanese version seems to be more what I would expect, although Passage still looms largely...
  1. A Song For You: 9/12 (75%) (not counting “Song For You" reprise)
  2. Close To You: 8/12 (66%)
  3. Passage: 5/8 (62%)
  4. Carpenters: 6/10 (60%)
  5. Horizon: 6/10 (60%)
  6. A Kind Of Hush: 6/10 (60%)
  7. Made In America: 5/10 (50%)
  8. Now & Then: 5/14 (35%) (counting medley as separate songs and not counting “Yesterday Once More" reprise)
  9. Christmas Portrait: 5/17 (29%)
  10. Offering/Ticket To Ride: 3/13 (23%)
  11. Voice Of The Heart: 2/10 (20%)
  12. Lovelines: 1/12 (.08%)
  13. An Old-Fashioned Christmas 1/14 (.07%)

EXCLUSIVE! It’s Yesterday Once More: Carpenters “Complete Singles” Released For Public Television

AUGUST 24, 2015 BY JOE MARCHESE

BUY NOW FROM KQED.ORG

On November 5, 1969, the very first single by Carpenters was released on A&M Records. “Ticket to Ride” b/w “Your Wonderful Parade” announced the fresh talents of Richard Carpenter, 23, and Karen Carpenter, 19. The dramatically reinterpreted Beatles song introduced radio to Karen’s richly intimate voice, and the bitingly ironic flipside heralded the songwriting team of Richard Carpenter and John Bettis – while both sides revealed Richard’s prodigious gifts for arrangement and orchestration. On Valentine’s Day, 1970, “Ticket to Ride” entered the Billboard Hot 100 where, five weeks later, it peaked at a more-than-respectable No. 54. With their very next single, “(They Long to Be) Close to You,” the Carpenters would reach No. 1 on the Billboard Pop and Easy Listening charts, as well as topping Cash Box and Record World. In a career that spanned 1969 to 1983, Richard and Karen would notch 20 Billboard top 40 hits, including three #1s and five #2s, as well as fifteen Adult Contemporary #1s. The brother and sister earned three Grammy Awards, fifteen more nominations, and two song inductions into the Grammy Hall of Fame. More than 100 million Carpenters records have been sold. Now, the enduring music of Richard and Karen Carpenter is being celebrated with a very special new 3-CD release in conjunction with the public television return of the definitive documentary devoted to the duo.

CarpentersThe Complete Singles features, for the very first time, the A- and B-side of every Carpenters single released on A&M Records in the United States between 1969 and 1989 in their original single versions. As longtime fans and collectors know, the Carpenters’ singles frequently featured variations in mixes, length, vocals and instrumentation from the familiar album versions and subsequent remixes. These unique single versions have been highly sought-after on CD, and some of the tracks have never previously been released in the CD format at all.

The Complete Singles collects 66 songs on three discs, from 1969’s “Ticket to Ride” through 1989’s cassette-single release of Karen’s solo “If I Had You.” “Ticket to Ride” and “Your Wonderful Parade” are heard in their original mono single mixes, while the remaining 64 tracks are presented in their original stereo single mixes. I’m thrilled to announce that I have written the new liner notes for the 16-page booklet included with The Complete Singles. The set has been beautifully designed by Bill Pitzonka and includes rare and previously unpublished photos of the duo. Every shimmering track on this first-of-its-kind anthology has been freshly remastered at Universal Mastering with Jim Pierson and Richard Carpenter himself having assembled and supervised the release.

The Complete Singles is being released as a Public Television exclusive in conjunction with the upcoming broadcasts of Close to You: Remembering the Carpenters as part of the acclaimed seriesMy Music. The Complete Singles will not be for sale in stores or through online retail outlets and can only be purchased by making a contribution to Public Television stations when they begin airing Close to You: Remembering The Carpenters this December. However, KQED-TV in San Francisco will be airing an advance, sneak-peek broadcast of Close to You on Thursday, August 27 at 8:00 pm and is already offering The Complete Singles on their website which allows fans nationwide to make a contribution to KQED and receive The Complete Singles CD set by October, two months prior to the nationwide release on Public Television.

What happened to "Now" b/w "Look To Your Dreams" & "Little Altar Boy" b/w "Do You Hear What I Hear?" , both from 1984? Also, "Tryin' To Get The Feeling Again" w/ "Sing" was a CD single released in 1995? "Ave Maria" (1996)? Doesn't any of these count as singles?

I could be wrong but Now was never released as a US single, I believe it was in the UK or another country and it was backed with Look To Your Dreams. Little Alter Boy was a promo only so those don't count since it was not officially released to the public, Trying To Get The Feeling Again, I believe was a UK release only. Ave Maria I think was only a 3" CD single and I believe was Japan release only.

Thank you for the Japenese breakdown, I find it really interesting what singles were chosen for different markets and though passage is still high it's not like the US. I love seeing it broke down like this.

Now will we ever see a UK Single box set??

So, I am, will be, curious! How is this compared to 1969-1973 Japan Release. The sound, depth. I am beginning to to understand the obsessions found here.

You all are still amazing, and I marvel at your love and knowledge. You are all amazing here! Really!!!

I loved them, but I knew so little before I came here. Thank you for fixing that. A life cut so short still has so much to offer! Amazing !

TJL wrote a few pages back
"In addition to the original extras, the additional footage includes the full extended versions of six of the songs that we're only seen as clips in the original release.

So we can almost figure this out, right? I haven't watched my original pbs DVD in a while but can someone list all the PARTIAL only videos because from this list we can assume that 6 will be full length videos. TJL says there will be 6 new full versions.

Partial videos that I can remember from the original pbs video is Merry Christmas Darling but what were the others?

For all we know - Andy Williams show
We've only just begun - Bob Hope's show
Superstar
Rainy days
Close to you
Yesterday once more
Merry Christmas
Ticket to Ride
Bless the beasts
Hurting each other
Top of the world

They showed the DVD version of this tonight in the UK on Sky Arts but just the original DVD version (and not even in wide screen format!).

The press release also said these 6 performances were exclusive to this DVD release, so if that is truly the case, then they should be ones that aren't on any other previous release (Gold, Interpretations, etc.). That might help narrow it down a bit more as well.

Since this singles CD was announced and with my being eager to get a copy, I've been playing around with playlists and CD-Rs of this material that I own elsewhere. First up was Disc One, where I found that the total amount of recorded music on there exceeded the 79:57 limit on CDs by coming in at 80:04. Rather than finesse with the silences at the ends of track to shave off a few seconds, I just chopped off "Heather" as it's just an instrumental.

When it came around to the second disc, I didn't have that problem at all. But as I was listening to it, I found myself enjoying "I Have You" more than I ever had before. As an album track on HUSH, it never really stood out at all. But here, surrounded by the hits of "All You Get From Love Is A Love Song" and "Calling Occupants", somehow it shone a little brighter. I like the dual harmony vocal in spots and find it reminiscent of old Les Paul/Mary Ford records.

And it's kind-of funny that while "Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town" is front and center as track 5 on the disc, right in the middle of their regular stuff, "The Christmas Song" was juggled a bit in the order to be last.

I haven't gotten around to doing the third disc yet.

Yeah, if....
