Sergio Mendes & Brasil '77

Discussion in 'Look Around: Sergio Mendes/Brazilian Music Forum' started by AudiophilePhil, Oct 17, 2011.

  1. Where can I buy their albums on CD's?

It seems like they are less popular in the U.S. compared to Brasil '66.

I am looking for albums from 1971 to 1979.

    Does anyone has info?

    Thanks,
    AudiophilePhil

All of the Sergio Mendes / Brasil '77 studio albums have been made available on CD at one time or another. Check Amazon.com and you'll see them all listed. It looks like a couple of them are either out-of-print in the US or are now imports with higher pricing. These include:

LOVE MUSIC - mine is an Arista/BMG release from Japan
VINTAGE '74 - same as above, Arista/BMG from Japan
HOMECOOKING - I have one from Collectors' Choice, and a Brazilian RCA/BMG disc
SERGIO MENDES (Elektra) - an Elektra release from Japan and as half of a two-fer from Collectibles
SERGIO MENDES & THE NEW BRASIL '77 - Mine is a Japanese import on Elektra / East/West
    BRASIL '88 - I have a Brazilian release from RCA / BMG
MAGIC LADY - mine is the other half of a two-fer from Collectibles
HORIZONTE ABERTO - the rarest of the bunch, it was released briefly on CAST Records in Brazil

Brasil '77 also released several live albums around the world, ands none of them have been made available on CD. These include:

IN CONCERT (A&M AMLS 64378) - recorded live at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles and released on LP in Great Britain.
CARNIVAL/LIVE IN JAPAN/GOLD DISC - recorded in Japan and released on LP there in several different titles and configurations.

  3. Thanks Harry. You are the expert of Sergio Mendes' and other A&M artist.
What's the sound quality of the Japanese-made "Love Music", "Vintage '74" "Homecooking"and "The New Brasil '77"?

They sound fine to me, but I haven't really given many of them detailed and careful listening. The Bell/Elektra stuff doesn't fascinate me as much as the A&M era recordings do.

I realize now I should have included both PAIS TROPICAL and PRIMAL ROOTS, since both of those latter-day A&M's were credited to Brasil '77. In fact, some territories, like Australia, had STILLNESS credited to Brasil '77.

  5. Who is holding the original master tapes of the Bell/Elektra albums of Sergio Mendes? It seems like vinyl is the way to go for good sound for those albums.
