Songs That Would Sound Good, Tijuana Brass Style

BTW, in an earlier post I said AA was a B side to Fox Hunt or Last Tango- "Fire and Rain" was the song I was thinking of. Not happy with that one either. YET- YSTSB is among my favorite Herb and the TjB albums- It would be the first of the coming re-releases in my cart, beleive it or not!

Seems to me that it's kinda hard to butcher an already crappy song...

Capt. Bacardi
...hater of whiny, self-serving sensitive tunes...

Don Ellis did a great version of it with what sounded like a dog howling in the background...

Dan

As for a great cover song...how about Peggy Lee's IS THAT ALL THERE IS? The TJB could have done a lot with that tune...

Dan

I'd like to see him do a cover of "Dindi", seeing as it's stuck in my head playing over and over and over...

I'd like to hear Herb sing "Pure Imagination" from Willy Wonka.

Or...if you want to go way back, a duet with Lani on "I'll Never Smile Again"...with a slightly faster tempo. Maybe a Bossa Nova.

How about:

Classical Gas
Macarther Park
Eloise

Three from 1968, the BEST year in Pop Music EVER, and...

London Calling (Clash).

P.S. When "Do It Again" was mentioned I thought of The Beach Boys, not Steely Dan, then again I'm OLD!!!

One I always considered a natural TjB song is Dusty Springfield's "I Only Want To Be With You".

Harry
NP: Dusty Springfield's "I Only Want To Be With You".

I must confess that I have a hard time trying to fit more contemporary music into Herb Alpert's sound and style. But then again, I'm not very "hip" to much recent music...

But, I have an idea for something I think would be right up Herb Alpert's "alley" so to speak, and it came from the TJB heyday and very much carries the sound and "mood" of the time period. If you lived through that era, you may have a feeling for what I mean. Just today, I was watching the James Coburn IN LIKE FLINT movie(and also the OUR MAN FLINT movie which preceded it). I think that the main tracks, especially the one called "Your Zowie Face" from IN LIKE FLINT would have lent themselves very nicely to a Herb Alpert arrangement. Jerry Goldsmith was the composer of those tracks.

When I hear those, I think of what Herb did with "Casino Royale." That was another "period piece," so to speak...

Anyone remember the "FLINT" movies? Kind of corny, but very much characteristic of the time period. The soundtracks also were very "period typical," IMO.

DITTOS- Can't get enough of the Flint!!! My cellphone rings to the one in the flick- am I a fan or what? :D
REALLY GOOD IDEA
PS- I have NEVER see a Bond film except for CR!

I always thought the Bobby Goldsboro classic "Little Green Apples" would sound good in the "Sea is my Soil" treatment. The verses would be in the slow mode, and would go into the uptempo mode with the chorus "God didn't make little green apples, and it don't rain in Indianapolis in the summertime."

Yes, "Little Green Apples" and "Honey" (both performed by Bobby Goldsboro et. al, but actually written by Bobby Russell) would sound good, done with the "TjB Treatment"...!

Dave

...God didn't make Little Green Apples and it don't snow in Minneapolis, when the winter comes...there's no such thing as make-believe, puppy dogs or autumn leaves, no BB-guns...

I'd like to hear Herb play "Get The Party Started" (Pink) and "Turn Out the Lights" (Nelly Furtado).

Just to throw in a twist from my opinions, I find that sometimes a song that was originally written for a certain performer, or to be used in a specific musical context; eg, movie soundtrack, can sometimes be hard for another performer to cover well.

What I am trying to say in regard to this thread is that a song that I might like that was initially recorded as a vocal, for example, may not work well when played on trumpet. Sometimes it works OK; sometimes not.

There are a couple TJB recordings of songs that were covers of other artists that IMO, suffer from this kind of thing. And, of course, someone else may like the TJB arrangement quite well. So, it is a matter of opinion.
But, I think a performer is usually at their best when performing songs that were written for them, and the composer took the performer into account in the composition.

I think the Beatles as writer/performers are a good example. Although they covered songs during their career, they wrote original songs that don't sound as good when done by others, IMO...When those songs are covered, it just isn't the same...

As I mentioned above, I think this may be one of the things that appeals to me about all the Sol Lake songs...

This also works in reverse. For example, I think the Brasil '66 version of "Norwegian Wood" is an improvement over the Beatles' original. Same for Sandpipers' "Things We Said Today."

I remember being rather disappointed when I found out that Herb didn't sing IF YOU COULD READ MY MIND...I always thought he could have done a lot with it...not that the instrumental isn't good...

The market must have been flooded with a lot of "If You Could Read My Mind's"; Barbra Streisand, Vikki Carr and of course, Gordon Lightfoot had versions they "sung" out... Andy Williams even had a version, but it was issued over-seas; I have it on his B-Sides & Rarities CD.

Herb could have sung his version, too...I know...

I’d like to see Herb do a TJB style cover of the Paul Williams song “Love Is All Around” (Theme from “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”). Sure it’s kind of happy and sappy, but I’ve always liked it. I think it might work – hey he did “Mame” and “Hello Dolly”…

Sing along with me:

Who can turn the world on with her smile
Who can take a nothing day
and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile

Well it's you girl and you should know it
with each glance and every little movement you show it

Love is all around no need to waste it
You can have the town why don't you take it
You're gonna make it after all

I hope this suggestion doesn’t get me kicked out of the A&M Forum!

I've seen "Love Is All Around" credited many ways:

Written By: Paul Williams, Performed By: Sonny Curtis
Written by Sonny Curtis
Written by Paul Wiliams

I don't have an athoritative answer - sorry
