SOTW: "Say You Do", Janet Jackson SP-12059

Discussion in '12-inch Singles/EPs/Remixes' started by JH12"fanatic, Jun 12, 2011.

"Say You Do" was the third single released from Janet Jackson's self-titled debut album in April of 1983. The song was written and produced by Rene Moore & Angela Winbush (of R&B duo Rene & Angela) and co-produced by Bobby Watson of Rufus (Moore's half-brother). The 12" version of the song was remixed by Rick Gianatos (also remixed the 12" versions of "Contact" by Edwin Starr, "Get Down" by Gene Chandler, and "The Second Time Around" by Shalamar). The 12" single is an extended remix, with the original LP version running 5:2o and the 45 edit at 3:48.

The B-side "You'll Never Find (Love Like Mine)" is another Rene & Angela original and is not a cover of the Lou Rawls song penned by Gamble & Huff.

That said, "Say You Do" does bare more than a passing resemblance to older brother Michael's "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough". The single was a sizeable hit on the Billboard R&B singles chart peaking at #15 and on the Club Play chart at #11. Unlike the first two singles ("Young Love" and "Come Give Your Love To Me"), "Say You Do" did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100.

Given how popular Janet Jackson became in later years, this is an interesting entry. Many listeners had no idea that Janet Jackson even had two albums prior to her groundbreaking Control (which was produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis), which was the first one to really make a splash on the Top 40.

R&B/dance radio locally was all over "Say You Do" and the song that preceded it, "Come Give Your Love To Me." ("Young Love" had moderate play here, from what I remember.) The former, as Jeff mentions above, did sound similar enough to the Michael Jackson hit that radio played that connection up quite a bit, and it almost came off as a "look at what baby sister can do" type of novelty around here.

I remember buying her second album Dream Street when it came out, but radio here barely touched it, and maybe perhaps in a regional way, it was overlooked here.

Now, the "multimedia" part of the exhibit. :D

I could not find the remix on YouTube, but the album version is easy to find:

Nice work on the "multimedia" part of this thread! :D

    Not bad for a bona-fried knucklehead. :D

I'm surprised our prime source Slayd5000 did not have a 12" of this one posted.

I'm sure he'll get around to it soon enough. He's got a lot of rekkids to wade through I'm sure. :D

Sad part is, by the time he gets a good chunk of them online, the YT police shut him down.

I know it takes forever to upload video. I had to upload two clips to the Yellowjackets' official YouTube channel, and the clips took several hours each (both were 15 minutes long). It was worth it though. Both were from their first appearance at Montreux (from the "Casino Lights" album), back when Robben Ford was still on guitar and fronting the group.

Wow, I didn't realize the upload time for videos on YT was that long.:faint: :D

Part of it is throttled bandwidth, the other part is the time their server takes to transcode my video into their format.

Ha ha, I've got it shot and ready for upload but I was saving it for a mini A&M 12" set :)

It's all good! I'd post a few things myself if I had the time. In fact, I'm supposed to be working right now...
