The Rat City Brass

The neighbor of a friend of mine in the Seattle area plays in a band called the Rat City Brass, doing mainly TJB cover tunes. Someone grabbed a quick video of one of their performances:

A little shameless plug for anyone in the Seattle area to check 'em out. :D

Saw this last week - they're pretty good. Heard some sour trumpet notes, though. Two band members of the feminine gland, as Colonel Potter would say!

The lady on guitar sort of gives it a Carol Kaye vibe. :D

Actually, I think she IS playing bass and the guitarist is the guy ball the way to the right. SO she DOES give it a Carol Kaye vibe!

We could use a listing of tribute bands. I know the Black Sombrero Brass are one. :agree:

Out in San Francisco there's the band "Herb."

Why does that sound familiar? It reminds me of one of the bands on that Surfin' Senorita CD.

I played in a TJB copy or cover band for several years many years ago during the heyday of the original TJB.

Many such bands, including the one from my own past, can do a pretty good job (especially since the music itself isn't all that technically difficult - playing the notes is easy enough, but the sound and style of the original cannot be duplicated - there is only one Herb Alpert and the sidemen that made up the TJB were top flight musicians - most imitators aren't). However, as in the case of the myriad of Beatles cover bands, other than copying the songs, they aren't anything like the original in any way whatsoever. If approached with that understanding and expectation, they can be entertaining and perhaps enjoyable, depending...

It is often said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Perhaps Herb is amused by imitators, but he doesn't have much to worry about in regard to any of these kinds of groups being mistaken for the "real deal."

I couldn't agree more, Captaindave. I also hear some sour notes, phrasing problems, & I could go on. But hey.... these folks are obviously having a blast, and are making a go of it. I'm very happy for them! (and seriously envious) I'm hoping they make it down to the Portland area this year. I'd love to see them perform.
