I just added these to the Julius Wechter & The Baja Marimba Band Facebook Page and thought that I would share them with members over here.

Thanks Mr. Bill & Harry. That's how we did it before anyone dreamed up digital - a camera with film in it, go figure. My camera at the time was the newly released Nikon F3. No auto-focus, but auto exposure metering and great quality.

It really takes me back to a fun time - I had the run of the house, including an upper level. They played there for a whole week and I went every night. There are a load of B&W negatives and color slides and I'm really happy to get back into them. The best thing is that I bought a high end film scanner and am easily able to digitize and share these great memories!

Wow, ultra-cool photos Steve! I wish I could've seen these group when they toured but my folks couldn't afford the tix when the TJB came to Chicago. I am totally jealous!

I saw this bunch at the old Valley Forge Music Fair. Lani was there and Julius was there, for sure. I don't recall a whole lot from that show. I was probably mesmerized.

Like Capt B, my folks didn't have enough $ to let me go see them when they played near us... It was an exciting time because I hadn't discovered the TJB until after the original brass broke up... And yet, disappointing since I only got to see them on the Sentry TV special and appearances on Midnight Special, Dinah etc...

Excellent photos, Steve. I was living in the Netherlands at the time and roundly digging the release of You Smile--the Song Begins and rejoicing that Herb had reformed the TJB. I don't suppose he had any overseas dates in 1974? I certainly don't remember hearing about any then.

Sadly I was only 10 at the time....

Saw both the '74 and '75 concerts at Blossom Music Center in northeast Ohio. At the '74 concert, Herb recounted the experience of attending the birth of his daughter.

VERY nice photos! I had the pleasure of seeing this version of the TJB at the Civic Auditorium in Portland, Oregon. It was '74 or '75. An evening I'll never forget. I remember Herb commenting on how nice it was to play in a hall paneled in wood. The whole gang was there, including Lani & Julius. Dave Frishberg was on piano. Herb joked that Dave could play Spanish Flea "sideways".

I know Herb & TJB played in England and France in '74. I read about those gigs in Billboard. Don't know about any other overseas gigs.

Well hey, so was I...and that didn't stop me from going! Actually, my folks took me as a surprise. Had no clue where I was going until we got to Pine Knob (Clarkston, MI) and I saw the marquee at the entrance. We also went in '75. Barely remember the concerts, other than "Zorba" for the encore and the whole place in an uproar. :D

These would be great on the TJB site as well...

    I was there, too.

I was also there when the original group played two nights for the opening season of Blossom back in August, 1968.

Incredible performances. I remain affected by those 1968 concerts event to this day - over 43 years years later.

That's the year I first met Julius Wechter and watched the TJB rehearse at A&M...
  17. RichardWarner Member

You saw them rehearse? More please.

Yep Richard- I've been saying I would write a blog about it here for years- but sometimes something like that is hard to put to paper (so to speak)... I was about 16 and a half and met Julius by sheer luck- the TJB, BMB, etc were even then my supreme favorites. I spent a whole day with Julius in the Chaplain theater at A&M (a very intimate room) watching that group of TJB rehearse...Lani Hall and Jerry Moss popped in briefly, but for the most part it was just me.
Maybe you could interview it out of me! :)

    Hi Captain!

Herb and the TJB also played in Germany that year. As a young student in Frankfurt I was glad to attend the concert in Frankfurt in fall 1974. At that time bootlegs were really impossible. How could I get at least the sound of the concert? I was surprised to see TV cameras. My conclusion: This concert will be recorded by the ZDF. Wonderful! On December 31, 1974 the highlights (45 minutes) of the concert were aired. What could I do to get the sound? I asked a friend of mine who learned to become a TV technican, if he could help he out. Yes he manipulated my old B/W TV so that I was able to record at least the sound of this program on a Grundig tape recorder. Although there was additional noise on the tape which could not be eliminated I was happy, played the songs many times and even transfered it to a audio-cassette. But that wasn't the end of the story.
1997 I got to know that ZDF is willing to copy certain programs of the past on a video tape for private use. It wasn't cheap but I ordered this concert. After receiving the copy I was stunned of the very good quality.
Now I plan to produce my own DVD of the concert in order to store up my first Herb Alpert concert.
By the way, Steve Schaefer was playing the drums and a guy from cuba the bass. Can't remember his name.

    Many regards
    Arthur

Papito Hernandez was the bass player you're thinking of.
