I have this one. When I started getting into the Wes Montgomery A&M albums, I managed to find all three of the studio albums. A post from, I believe it was LPJim, outlined the fact that a "GREATEST HITS" disc existed with the same track list as the CLASSICS 22 disc, and I wanted to grab one of these for the five non-album tracks that are included.

I remembered a record store that had one of those GREATEST HITS discs, but it was a mall store they wanted a small fortune for it - something like $18.99 or $19.99 and I kept resisting it. Later it disappeared and I resorted to finding one on eBay and snagged the purple CLASSICS 22 version.

I suppose that Wes' "My Favorite Things" could be considered in with other A&M Christmas selections (along with his "Greensleeves" from ROAD SONG). I know there's a group out there who resists "My Favorite Things" as a Christmas song, but I reason that that particular door was left open years ago.

The best thing on this collection is the 5 previously unreleased tracks:

    Switchin'
    Pata Pata
    Butterfly
    Hello Young Lovers
    My Favorite Things
  4. Rudy Spinning The Wheels Of Steel

Both track listings are identical on those two sets? I wonder if the Greatest Hits (which BTW is part of the Backlot Series, not the original A&M release from the early 70s) sounds better than the purple Classics, or if they are digitally identical. I had the impression the Backlot Series were all new compilations.

A shame they don't put out a two-CD "Complete A&M Wes Montgomery" set, like Verve did last year with their Montgomery albums.

I don't own both, so I can't say if one sounds better than the other. I suspect they are digital clones, with then PolyGram taking the easy way out. I know the track listings are identical in the same order.

I found a copy of Classics...going to check out those five songs.

I prefer the 'Back Lot Series' Greatest Hits, myself--packaging-wise, that is... (Even right down to asking my record store seller's opinion on "which to buy" at the time, too)

But, never-the-less, this seems to be much more definitive as an ideal compilation for Montgomery's career, if it is mostly for the 'previously-unreleased five songs'....

More than makes up for there not being a 'Wes Montgomery Foursider', too....

Looks like there's another title for this comp, too. A&M in Germany released it as an A&M GOLD SERIES title - probably Japan, too.

...which proves the track lineup was versatile the world over! :uhhuh:
