The CD Reissues are Wonderful.

Harry, You seem to be missing I feel You and Anything goes. I bought all 26 titles in the end. I love looking at the titles on the spine of the CD, can't believe I finally own every single album for the first time ever ! To own Summertime and Warm and also The Brass are comin on CD feels unbelievable - rather than downloads I have the real thing ! Looking forward especially to listening to Herb's solo albums as I didn't have any of them, except RISE. I feel complete, for the first time in my life :goodie:

I didn't buy the new versions of the Herb/Lani albums as I already have these from their original issues and they are likely not any different.

I debated about some of the solo efforts, but ultimately decided to get them. I believe that the 80s and early 90s discs probably have sonic improvements.

I'm wondering how they came up with the catalog numbers? I understand that since both Whipped Cream and the Christmas Album got released first, they ended up as HRB 011 and HRB 012. So I'm curious as to why the other titles aren't in numerical order (013, 014, etc). Not complaining, mind you, just curious. They seem to go in 4's until Beat Of The Brass.

I sure don't know, but found it interesting that vinyl, CDs and downloads each got their own UPC bar codes and cat #s, which would explain the gaps. Previously, (I don't recall which thread) I posted a chart of the numbers.

That makes sense, as each different format is a different "stock unit" so to speak. Whipped Cream vinyl is HRB 009 and Xmas album vinyl is HRB 011.

The catalog numbers are somewhat European in nature, as many didn't use numerical ordering for their entire catalog but instead, would use a set of letters to differentiate the catalog numbering. For my first pressing Genesis Genesis CD on Virgin, the catalog number is GEN CD1. For We Can't Dance on vinyl on the Virgin label, the number is GEN LP3 (the CD likely is GEN CD3 there). GEN CD2 would be Invisible Touch.

The new CDs fit nicely into one section of my IKEA shelves so I had to take a picture. This is turned sideways so the spines are more readable.

NICE!!!
Now, just curious: Do the discs themselves have any standout features, or are they just like the Shout Factory releases? It's no big deal, as my copies of Volume 2, Warm, Brass Are Comin', Summertime, Coney Island and Main Event are all on order and should be arriving any day.

I don't think I've seen a scan of an actual disc anywhere yet - so here's one for you. All of the CDs use this same label format - a pale, ochre-type color, with a Herb Alpert Presents trumpet logo at 9 o'clock, title and artist at top, catalog number at 3'oclock, and track list on the bottom. It pretty much mimics the old classic A&M style label.

It looks just a bit strange when you get to the mid-70's and beyond (no pun intended) releases that originally used different style labels and seeing them with the more traditional style like this.

The nostalgic part of me loves that they made them look like little records, but my old eyes hate the fact that it means all the text has be super tiny to fit in the "label" area. LOL!

Actually the text is quite easy to read given the bold type.

What, you mean you don't have all the song titles memorized?

I wish they'd thought of putting the HAP logo in a white rectangle...then the mimicry would have been complete!

Interesting that the typesetting on the artist and title on the disc is very close to the original LP's typesetting. Close enough to jog the memory here, at any rate!

I'm sure you know the reason I only ordered these titles, because they're the only ones I don't have from the original A&M copies and the Shout Factory re-issues. I'm pretty happy with all of them, and I'm sure there's probably not much difference with the HAP copies.
So in the end, all of my vinyl is original A&M, while the CDs are somewhat of a hodgepodge between A&M, Shout Factory and Herb Alpert Presents (depending upon which label first offered each of the respective titles).

I know and your situation is the same as mine. My friend and my reasons are the same on all points. And Congratulations to everyone on your purchases regardless of the format whether it be CDs Vinyl or Downloads

Sort of like this?
Yep, although I guess they'd need to tweak the font somewhat if they did it that way...Maybe make the HERB and ALPERT bigger to the point where they fill the same width as the PRESENTS.

I can't say it's a huge difference--it's noticeable but subtle. They're smoother and better balanced, more natural sounding. The Shout Factory titles could sometimes be a bit brighter, or have some compression in mastering (like the first couple that were released). Yet on something like S.R.O., it sounds like there is a wet blanket over the Shout version, whereas the HAP has it sounding more like the original vinyl copy, clearer sounding.

Well I'm not an 'audiophile' per se, and I don't know the details of all the frequencies and other technical terms. But I've always been one who prefers a 'brighter' sound, with a bit more treble in the mix and a comfortable [moderate] amount of bass. I never could enjoy my music sounding dead flat with no high end. Volume 2 is a great album IMHO. When I read that Herb said it had too much of a 'metallic' sound to it, I scratched my head. To me, most digital music is "good enough" for me. I have heard some compressed digital music which has a noticeable difference through a set of headphones or speakers within close quarters. But even those recordings (usually from a CD-R) sound just fine when I'm driving down the road in the car or just piddling around doing housework, etc. As you said above, "subtle". And for that reason, I'm perfectly happy with the Shout Factory recordings. As Fred Dryer used to say, "Works for me".

Also, judging from the packaging of my HAP copies so far, I don't see any incentive to spend the extra $ on titles I already have from SF, which have extensive liner notes, extra photos and a lot more to offer aesthetically. At this point, I'm pretty well satisfied with what I have.

Now, if JUST YOU AND ME gets released, that should complete my digital Herb Alpert collection.

The first 95% of SOUNDS LIKE is/was in need of some *major* treble boost...it never matched the eq of "Casino Royale" (I know -- different studio and location).
It's interesting; how: the sound quality of the BMB recordings (done by a 22 year-old Bruce Botnick!) have it all-over, generally, the TJB's recordings.

Delighted to be able to say that I have received the full set of Herb's CD Reissues and will purchase another set to keep unopened.
However, I am a completist and will not be satisfied until we have BYOH, Bullish, Wild Romance, UASM, My Abstract Heart,
Second Wind, Passion Dance and Colors also on CD reissue.
On this subject and apologies if I have missed a thread on this matter, but are any of these titles under consideration for a reissue programme?

You forgot Herb's First solo album Just You And Me.

At this point, it's likely that future releases would hinge on how well the ones that are out are selling. If these languish in warehouses, then why would any more be released? The anecdotal good news here is that certain websites are reporting backorders on some of these titles. I would not be surprised to find that - as always - WHIPPED CREAM will outsell them all, followed by RISE and maybe GOING PLACES.

Thanks Harry.
I have JYAM on CDR taken from vinyl. The other outstanding titles that I mentioned, I do have on CD.
It would just be great to have all of these titles reissued, so I suppose we will just have to wait and see.
