Blue Note Records has announced the next run of titles in the Classic Vinyl Reissue Series, which presents all-analog 180g vinyl reissues that are mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes and manufactured at Optimal. Curated by Don Was and Cem Kurosman, the series continues its exploration of the extensive Blue Note catalog with titles that span the many eras and styles of the legendary label’s history. The newly announced titles begin on January 17 with two early-1960s hard bop albums—Like Someone In Love by Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers and Here To Stay by Freddie Hubbard—both of which are available for pre-order now on the Blue Note Store.

Other highlights of the new Classic Vinyl Series line-up include freewheeling late-1950s dates by Jimmy Smith (House Party) and Johnny Griffin featuring John Coltrane and Hank Mobley (A Blowing Session), late-1960s soul jazz by Lou Donaldson (Say It Loud) and Horace Silver (Serenade to a Soul Sister), 1970s jazz-funk classics by Donald Byrd (Stepping Into Tomorrow) and Eddie Henderson (Heritage), and two 1980s standouts that get their first-ever vinyl reissues cut directly from the original analog master tapes: Tony Williams Civilization and Don Pullen New Beginnings.

I see two titles that I will preorder.

Horace Silver – Serenade to a Soul Sister (1968)

This immediately followed The Jody Grind and slightly expands on that same style. It's also the last of his "classic" Blue Note dates before he updated his sound. I was hoping The Jody Grind was the next Silver title released, but maybe we'll see it next year. (The 2025 Tone Poet roster has Tokyo Blues on deck, and I'm looking forward to that one as well.)

Donald Byrd – Stepping Into Tomorrow (1974)

One of the five Mizell Brothers productions, not as essential as Black Byrd or Places and Spaces but I've enjoyed what I've heard of it. Byrd was a native of our area and had a strong following here throughout the 1970s.

These three are possibilities--I have to give them a spin first. I've wanted to get into more of Grant Green's records but haven't gone down that rabbit hole yet.

Sonny Clark – Sonny’s Crib (1957)
Grant Green – Solid (1964)
Jimmy Smith – House Party (1957-58)
