40th anniversary of "Music, Music, Music"

Richard didn't consider doing leads on Carpenters albums a mistake by the mid-1970s. One of the last fan newsletters published when Karen was still alive specifically stated that Richard would sing lead on two songs on the intended follow-up album to "Made in America."

Fingers crossed that they are released someday along with other Carpenters tunes that have yet to see the light of day.

Karen had the best female voice in pop music history. She should always have been the only lead singer, IMHO. He's not the least bit capable in that regard and he had no business singing lead on the same albums with her. Few would, to be sure, but he certainly didn't. He's a fantastic background/harmony singer...and that's it. That he finally stopped doing leads on their albums indicates that he realized his mistake. That said, he absolute was a member of the group and should always have been credited as such.

Your point is?

Really, with the exception of the Christmas albums, the albums from 1975 to 1989 were Karen Carpenter solos, not Carpenters.

The bigger question to ask though is, what would Karen have thought of the idea that all post 1975 albums should carry her name alone? Remember her needlepointed sign?

There is no KC without RC.

I agree on the last point. Richard's work is all for naught if he doesn't have Karen. Karen made his whole approach to music marketable. This has been borne out over time as he's done nothing of note without her. When she passed, his ability to make new music died. Even his outside production work hasn't yielded successful results. Shame given the obvious talent at work in him.
