Ah, so that's where the logo for Mr. Jones's production company (as ubiquitously shown on his productions for Michael Jackson's best-known works) originated.

What strikes me about this album is how mellow it is. A laid-back kind of funk, somewhat ethereal at times. I have the MFSL version, which sounds nice, naturally. Things don't really get kickin' until the second side, when Q's version of "Manteca" starts grooving. Cat Anderson's screaming trumpet highlights this tune as well as "Superstition". It's kind of weird hearing Phil Woods playing over pop changes, although if I recall he was the sax player on Billy Joel's "Just The Way You Are". This is an okay album, but I prefer Q's Walking In Space and Smackwater Jack albums.

Every few years I return to the promise of this album with renewed hope -- only to confirm the substance of music magic just isn't there. Instead, I'll keep 'Walking In Space'.

This is my 2nd favorite Q album, after THE DUDE. I like the mellowness of this one. The title song, "First Time Ever" and "Summer in the City" are faves. I didn't know this one was on CD...gotta get the credit card out again...
