I've always thought that the Ighner material from the mid-70s was some of Sergio's most enjoyable, helping him to forge his soul cred. I had known for some time that Dame Shirley Bassey did "Davy" in 1974 with Ighner (along with "The Trouble With Hello is Goodbye", which also turned up on Sergio's 1975 Elektra debut). What I didn't know until today is that Marlena Shaw's "Who is This Bitch, Anyway?" was done with Ighner, and that that album contains a really unusual slow version of "Davy" (almost like a gospel tune), as well as a great version of "You Been Away Too Long."

I did a bunch of Ighner tunes back in the day (I want to say Patrice Rushen did one of his that my band covered). I assume everyone knows Sondra Catton is his sister.

"Everything Must Change" is the Igner tune most often covered---Shirley Bassey did that one, as well as Quincy Jones, (sung by Bernard, himself) Yvonne Elliman, and Judy Collins...
