I was just listening to my audio files on shuffle mode and it started playing Sérgio Mendes - Toucan's dance, it is a song from 1989 Brazilian soap-opera Tieta, I wonder if you know it (the song, not the soap):

"Toucan's Dance" was from Sergio's 1989 effort on A&M called ARARA.

ARARA was on heavy (and I mean HEAVY) rotation at The Mirage in Las Vegas when we were there on our honeymoon years (and years and years) ago.

I was at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas a few days ago and heard his version of "Somewhere In The Hills" with Natalie Cole over the loudspeaker....

It wasn't until finding the A&M Corner in 1997 that I went looking for albums to fill in the missing pieces of my Sergio Mendes collection, and ARARA was one of the first of my finds. I'd skipped all the '80s stuff when it was new, preferring the old Brasil '66 magic.

I was quite taken with ARARA upon listening to it. I can still recall sitting in the parking lot at work, cramming in a few more tunes before heading back inside.

The lack of discussion here about ARARA - and many of Sergio's later albums - has always amazed me.

I Googled it and arara does translate, "Macaw", sounds cute!

I also wanted to check the cover of this album and read this:

However, every time I decide to make it, I look at this really disappointing cover and change my mind. There is nothing wrong with Sergio Mendes, the concept, etc. What really disturbs me is the way this beautiful macaw had his wings clipped. I agree with wing clipping since the day zecalouro flew away home and this procedure, when made by a specialized vet, cannot be identified with eye observation.

Who the freak is Zeca Louro??? Some pet parrot of Sergio's??

--And Arara happens to have a simple cover of a "macaw & Sergio w/ his piano", too...!

This is your typical Sergio Mendes album (which by typical I mean superb), full of percussions, keyboards, vocal assemblies, and that ability to encapsule what Brasil is in a simple disc. Some classic songs can be found here, like the timeless Mas Que Nada, or Ivan Lins' The Island.

Hmmmmm. So The island, English version, is around since the 80's? I thought Barbra Streisand's recording from 1999 was the first one...

I think it probably was Patti on the Juntos LP with Ivan, but I'd need to go check. Don't have that here with me right now.

Looked it up - Patti recorded "The Island" on her album EVERY HOME SHOULD HAVE ONE (her biggest pop album - it was the one with "Baby Come To Me") back in 1981, produced by Quincy Jones. I'm assuming it was the first recording of the English lyric........"Juntos" came out in '84.

By the way, there's a lot of other singers featured on ARARA besides Gracinha - Siedah Garrett, Angie Jaree, Kevyn Lettau, Joe Pizzulo and others.......

And it's Angie Jaree that sang lead on the ARARA version of "The Island". To me, she sounded a lot like Gloria Estefan on that track.
