I have the singles 1969-1973 cd, No:AM393601-2. Which is the original cd release. Does anybody know if they have released the same cd on the remastered collection? Why i ask is because on remastered cd's, where the cd sits in its case, it has the catalogue of all the remastered cd's that A&M have re released. In it is the singles 1969-1973. I am enquiring about this as i cannot find it anywear.

Also i know that videos exists for goodbye to love, for all we know and i need to be in love which i have seen on remembering the Carpenters DVD. Does anyone know why they have not been released on a video collection, ie, Yesterday once more or Gold.

It was released as part of the remastered collection, but it is already out of print. It was replaced by the Singles 1969-1981.

The "I Need To Be In Love" video was released on the Japanese version of "Yesterday Once More". I don't know why it wasn't released elsewhere.

The removal of THE SINGLES: 1969-73 from the A&M/Universal catalog is one of the worst things they've ever done -- I consider that album to be the most perfect album ever released by any artist...

What is most sorely missed about it is the "Close to You" intro/overture into "We've Only Just Begun." I've always wondered why, since no new overture was used for THE SINGLES: 1969-81, they didn't go ahead and use that original overture. It turned the album from a collection of songs into a work of art, in my opinion.

David

Agreed. I was disappointed too to learn that SINGLES 69-73 was deleted. It had always been a top seller, and whether or not it was 'all-inclusive', it remains one of the best compilations ever done.

For the record (no pun intended), the "Close To You" intro leading to "We've only Just Begun" can be found (in video form with the same audio) on the very-much-in-print DVD of Carpenters GOLD. Still -- no excuse for deleting SINGLES 69-73.

Another point I'd like to make in this thread about the Remastered Classics series is that under the tray liner where the pictures appear of the series, INTERPRETATIONS is listed, but I've never seen an actual "Remastered" version of it.

Harry,

the remastered version of INTERPRETATIONS exists; I saw a copy of it, when I visited Achim last week in Neuss. This is ofcourse the british version, which contains much more songs than the US version.

Don't know, if the sound quality is that much better than on the original INTERPRETATIONS CD, but I'm sure Achim could tell you.

I agree with all that the remastered Singles 69-73 is out of print. It has a kind of magic woven into it and I am glad I purchased it a few years back.

I need To Be In Love was performed Live At The New London Theatre in 1976 and was released on The Carpenters: A Video Biography Volume 2

Although all the tracks here are Karaoke music in one speaker and Actual music in the other, this performance is surprisingly unharmed and as It is live, is well worth buying.

Released in 2000 VCD 2.0 Video Karaoke

If you mean the promotional video to I Need To Be In Love, I do not know of any official release to date. I am afraid that I do not know of any commercial or promotiuonal release of videos for Goodbye To Love or For All We Know but both are available in live performance on Live At Budkan 1974 (Japanese Release with subtitles unfortunately).

Video or DVD or Laserdisc releases to my knowledge include:

Yesterday Once More
Only Yesterday (Yesterday Once More re-release)
Gold (Same as above)
Interpretations
Close To You: Remembering The Carpenters
Live At Budkan 1974
Superhits (basically Gold in different order with 3 bonus videos, (A Place To)Hideaway/Ave Maria and Top Of The World

If you can obtain a copy of the DVD Superhits, the bonus track "Top Of The World" includes scenes from the I Need To Be In Love video but you don't really get the whole story like the original promo video

I had no idea that the SINGLES 69-73 was deleted & out of print. That is like there main CD with all the hits.

So if I find a Remastered Singles 69-73, then I should pick one up?

Absolutely pick up a remastered SINGLES: 1969-73 CD if you find one -- they're quite the rarity...

As for the video for "I Need to Be In Love," the original promotional film HAS been released commercially, but only on the far-eastern versions of the YESTERDAY ONCE MORE DVD. I have an all-region (region 0) NTSC DVD version of YESTERDAY ONCE MORE from China that contains the original promotional film, and I know it has appeared on versions of that DVD from Japan and a few other countries on the other side of the Pacific (perhaps Singapore or Malaysia?).
The live-concert version of the video on A VIDEO BIOGRAPHY, with the karaoke track in one channel, is a very cool thing, too, since the original audio on the other channel is actually the live audio from the televised concert, not a synchronized version using the studio recording.

David

There's also a possibility Universal might delete the 2-CD YESTERDAY ONCE MORE-it's holding too much competiton with the newer compilations(Singles 1969-1981/Essential Collection).I have to admit I never liked SINGLES 1969-1973.Most of Karen & Richard's hit singles were not their best work, and, no matter how popular those songs were 30 years ago, putting all of them on 1 album is more like a 70's nostalgia sountrack, than a truly "classic" album.Of course,if "This Masquerade","Crescent Noon" and "A Song for You" had been included(instead of Sing,Top of the world, hurting eachother),it would have been a much stronger compilation.(and more favorable with the critics!).The newer compilations like LOVE SONGS,INTERPRETATIONS and 20 CENTURY MASTERS corrected that problem by balancing the signature songs and better singles with alot of the great album cuts. Those 3 compilations are much more definitive than any of the greatest hits/singles packages.

Mr. J....I disagree...while This Masquerade and A Song for You are signature songs, the Singles 69-73 is the best magazine project, without garbage and remixes.

Plus..I will be bold here...the is nothing past '73 that changes their style, just enhances it.

If you check Ebay from time to time or even Half.com you can still get the remastered classic's version of "Singles 69-73" at a reasonable price. Also it was released in Japan not long ago as a budget CD(well a budget CD for a Japan release as the Japanese CD's tend to be more expensive).

The UK remaster of "Interpretations" is in fact an error. While it does have the new packaging and the sticker that says 30th Anniversary it is not remastered. It is indentical to the older Japanese/European/Canadian release. The total playing time is identical and the sound is as well. Also the liner notes still says "mastered by Arnie Acosta" who mastered many of the earlier CD releases as he was the main in house mastering guru at A&M back in the 80's/90's.

I'm gonna go out this weekend & see if I can find this Re-Mastered Singles 69-73 CD at the records shops.

David, I know exactly what your talking about with the A Video Biography, this is a cool video to watch as you can hear karen singing it live instead of the original soundtrack. Isn't this the only song/video on the whole DVD that is actually sung live & we get to hear it actually live? I knew immediately when I heard it.

Is this DVD a bootleg video? I also like the video that takes you on a tour of Richard's garage of cars.

You know, I've never been able to figure out if A VIDEO BIOGRAPHY is a bootleg or not...

Since the quality of the karaoke track is so poor, and the video quality isn't as pristine as other releases, I suspect it wasn't a project with which Richard was involved directly.

On the other hand, much of the footage is "unreleased" commercially, so I imagine it would have been hard for the producers of the DVD to have come up with it without permission.

Plus, the back of the box includes the A&M and Polygram logos, and at the bottom it says, "Special thanks to Richard Carpenter."

So it's either a legitimate release or an extremely clever bootleg, but I honestly don't know which.

As Scott B Stated Singles 1969-1973 Remastered Reissue was issued in Japan in December 2001 Along With Both Original Christmas Albums.

I Have Managed on This USA Visit to Obtain USA 69-73 Out Of Print Remastered Album Plus Another 1991 Original Full Box Copy of From The Top :)

As With Others I Have Always Loved The Extended WOJB with Close To You Opening and Rerecodings of TOTW Plus Ticket .....

Unbeliveable that Universal have Outside Japan / Asia have deleted this Classic Album with Eight Million Plus Sales in USA Alone and Then Casually Released Singles 1969-1981 With No Support At All !!

A Video Biography

Chris, you mention the tour of Richards Garage

If I am not mistaken, I think this is footage from Richards 1984 Syonara Japanese Television Special

I bought my copy from a legitimate Karaoke Specialist. I have never really considered whether it may be BOOTLEG or not.

If it is, it would seem clear that there are many more WELL PRESERVED copies of rare Karen & Richard performances out there just screaming to be released on DVD

Hi Steve, Nice webpage.

The pics that you have for "Those Good Ole Dreams" Was there a second video made, Karen & Richard look very different from the video to this song that appeared on Yesterday Once More VHS Video.

As far as I am aware Chris, a second video was recorded for release in Japan although Karen & Richard are somewhat over shadowed by lots ofd crazy animations

It reminds me of the opening scenes to a childrens program - Think of "Rainbow" and you'll get the idea

Karen looks great though and they both look incredibly happy in the video

Interesting discussion here about the "1969-73"album. I recall buying it as an LP waaaaaay back when it was a new release and I was just a young laddie of 13 years old.) I also recall being disappointed that the offering put out by the Carpenter's that year was a 'best of' compilation. Perhaps it was a portent of things to come? (Enough compilations already Richard...You can do better than that my Musical genius friend) All I knew at the time was that I was hungry for ANYTHING new that the Carpenter's released for sale back then. I still do........Some things never change.

I also received an autographed copy of "Singles: 1969 to 1973" signed by Richard Carpenter from KCET/PBS station during a fund raising drive for PBS while Richard was actually in the KCET Los Angeles studio 'Live' during the special showing of "Close to you: Remembering the Carpenter's". I paid a bundle for it ($200 dollars!) but it was and is worth every penny because the 'donation' went towards keeping PBS on the air providing terrific programming. It's a great album without question. You have to remember that the Carpenter's were touring very heavily during the time that the album came out, and there simply was not enough time left over that year to put out a fresh new album. I do recall the updated version of "Ticket" really stood out for me as something special because you could really hear the mature difference between the old version of the song, and the new one. I wonder what I ever did with that old LP? I betcha I tossed it in the garbage due to it being worn out from so much playing on my measley little MONO record player at the time. Oh to have that original album back in my pocession now.....(SP?)

Wow - Who say's technology hasn't evolved in a positive way since the advent of CD's? I play my autographed copy at least 8-10 times a year still.

I do think it's a great album in spite of it not having the majority of the songs being 'new'. It was the best they could give us at the time. Tooooo much touring as we all know now from Richard's recent interviews and thoughts on the matter of putting out at least one new album a year on top of touring all of the time.

I remember buying that album when it was new, too, and still have it. Though, like you, I was a little disappointed at no new songs, I was thoroughly delighted at the new recording of "Ticket To Ride" and all of the thoughtful segues and several single versions were now on an album. It flows so well - shame it's out of print.

There was also a Quad LP released of this title with naturally different mixes of all of the tracks.

I believe Singles 1969-1973 was also the first CD I ever bought.
