Christmas Portrait Redux update?

Error correction is probably a better term.
Ah. Gotcha. Given the correction inherent in players over the last thirty years, that really doesn’t matter anymore. The players have gotten good enough that it just doesn’t matter anymore and it hasn’t for a very long time. It wouldn’t even matter on the cheap ones anymore.

In short, there really is no audible difference in a regular CD and one made from anything else. They’re all the same. Bluespec is similar snake oil that no one needs to bother with. This is about making more money from a dying format and nothing more. 🤣🤣

In movies, "judder" is the term for that choppy look that a picture gets when an object moves fast across the screen. It is more noticable in movies than on TV because theatrical films play at 24 frames-per-second, while video runs at 60 frames. There have been advancements in filmmaking technology to allow 60-frame films (and even as much as 120 frames) but that tends to make a movie look "more like a soap opera" filmed on video tape, so filmmakers have mostly stayed away from it and have stuck with the tried-and-true 24 FPS. I saw a demonstration of the 120-FPS system at a convention once and thought it looked terrible.

Some modern TVs can reduce or eliminate judder, but that has the same effect of making a movie look "more like home video" than like an actual movie, so most people who are movie buffs will leave that setting turned off.

I'd never heard it applied to music.

OK, I'm wrong. "Jitter" is the correct term for CD and errors associated with the format. SHM was supposed to cut down on jitter.

I found this on the Universal Store Japan, it appears the Japan Exclusive is a special message from Richard. It could be and I'm guessing is that the US gets this special message but the Japan version has the interpretation of Richard's message in Japanese?

I think I know what Harry is saying about SHM-CDs because I have a dedicated system. I do hear some improvement on various SHM-CDs on my playback system but I got to wondering what, in particular, is different on SHM-CDs, to Ed’s counterpoint.

The playback I get on some (not all) SHM-CDs allows me to hear better placement, more presence.

However, the improved playback I notice is not isolated to SHM-CDs. Improved playback can be heard on better pressings from West Germany, UK and Dutton Vocalion hybrid CDs, to name a few. This makes me think, is a playback system capable of revealing any kind of new data on an SHM-CD? Na. The media is unchanged therefore it does not affect sound.

As with all SHM-CDs, any enhancements for the Japan Exclusive for 'Christmas Once More', will be quality of the mastering (which they advertise above). Certainly reduction of jitter results in a better playback, as Harry points out. Error rate corrections/eye patterns should likely also affect sound as it goes. And maybe add in manufacturing? Since I do still listen to CDs, I often enjoy a good Japan Manufactured SHM-CD.

So were the MFSL gold CDs. The thing is that the error correction in any CD player produced in the last 30 years or so is so good that the very slight jitter just doesn’t matter.

Please forgive me if I seem like a dog wrestling with a bone here. I just don’t like to see people be hoodwinked into thinking that SHM CDs or BlueSpec CDs or some as-yet-not-invented Super Duper Incredi-CD provides amazing sonic delights that, without them, you won’t hear. They’ll then feel compelled to part with extra cash they don’t need to part with. It’s been going on for far too long and if people only knew, this stuff would disappear.

In short, a CD is a CD is a CD. The material just doesn’t matter.

Okay, I’m done…🤣🤣

I've ordered a couple of Blu-spec CDs. They were cheap - and sound just the same as a standard CD.

I'm not trying to carry the flag for SHM CDs, believe me. But if one wants a Japanese edition of a CD, they might only be able to find an SHM version.

I have never noticed any difference between SHM and redbook CDs, and I own both with the same mastering.

The "jitter" thing I mentioned is only something I've read from a trusted audiophile type, and even there, as you say, all CD players handle error correction just fine.

There are so many new releases, rereleases coming out the next month or so. It’s hard on the finances.
It costs almost as much for shipping from Japan, as the price of the SHM version of Christmas Once More. I hope it’s around for a while. I’m sure it will sell out though. There are a whole bunch of new vinyl Christmas releases, including old singles coming next month from UMe too. $14.98 for a 45 is asking too much from the customers. I’m surprised they haven’t included MCD in the new releases they are offering on line. That one I would have to buy.

Regarding ‘Little Altar Boy’ … the timing of this seems rather free, with no real rhythm track. I’m wondering what Karen was hearing in the headphones while recording the vocal; possibly just piano? 🤔

I’m kinda bummed that there is no Bonus Track on the Japanese release. I guess Richard didn’t remix any additional songs like he did with RPO.

Interesting point - I wonder if there are other tracks he tried that didn't make the final tracklist. Having only enough room for 16 tracks does mean that several of her best Christmas vocal performances have been left out.

This may have already been discussed, and I missed it. Are the tracks going to be connected together, or will the tracks be separated so you play them on shuffle? The abruptness of the other collections when shuffling or set for random is a bit jarring.

What you're referring to is called "crossfading." There will be some of that overlap between tracks, yes.

Christmas Portrait is #10 on iTunes today.
Hopefully Christmas Once More will enter at #1.
Christmas Portrait all but dropped off of the iTunes Chart after a #10 showing a few days ago. Do you think that it was pulled due to the impending release of Christmas Once More? Christmas Collection is in the lower 70's but still...

It’s not pulled. It can still be downloaded from iTunes.

Good, that's one of my favorite things about Carpenters albums.

I imagine Richard hates "shuffle." Especially on Christmas albums -- clearly, he makes records to be played straight through!

I'm looking forward to hearing reports on how cool the packaging is for this new release. Unless it's really a must-have due to its coolness, this one is probably a streamer for me.
