When my late grandma got the Reader's Digest "Sweet With A Beat" back in October of 1972 in the mail, the song "Close To You" appeared on the 6 record set. This version was done by Joe Reisman, His Orchestra & Chorus(Joe died back in September of 1987) & had an easy listening instrumental called "Isle Of Capri" which can be found on Music Choice "Easy Listening" on TV. The version of "Close To You" can also be found on a Readers Digest compilation on CD but I am not sure the title. In the liner notes it says: The most surprising hit of 1970 was the Carpenters' recording of "Close To You"-surprising not only because their soft harmonizing and the simple melodiousness of the tune hit the top of the popularity charts in the midst of solid rock competition but also because both the song and the Carpenters had a history of rejection. "Close To You" was one of those rare songs by Burt Bacharach and Hal David that did not become a hit as soon as it was put out. And the brother and sister team of Richard and Karen Carpenter had spent five years trying to compete with the rock sound before they broke through with "Close To You" in 1970, when audiences welcomed their soft sound with open arms and open ears.
