Great Album. Fell in love with Ellis when I saw his band on TV at the '66 Monterey Jazz Festival.

This is a great album. I always loved how Don Ellis would write these charts with the odd time signatures, yet still make his band swing - kind of a more modern Brubeck, I suppose. Ellis's playing is terrific on this album. He has this playful way when doing a solo that starts rhythmically then just explodes afterwards. "Indian Lady" is a great example of that. Gotta love the 3 1/2 /4 time signature on "Open Beauty", as well as "new Horizons", which is in 17! :D There's some great solos by other members of the band, most notably Ron Myers on a couple of monster trombone solos ("Indian Lady" and "Alone", for example). Kind of interesting that the single versions of a couple of tracks appear here as well. Don't recall ever seeing them in a jukebox....
