With this one we finally got a proper cold ending. Love it to this day.

IMHO, entirely too much reverb on Karen's vocal as was his custom at that point. I do like the cold ending but that's about it. The original version is perfectly fine for me.

Perhaps the most glaring example in their extensive catalog of a blown opportunity by Richard to craft an incredibly brilliant and compelling arrangement, and turn what was a really good piece of music into a truly great one...Here's what he could (and should) have done with this:

(1) the 2nd verse (which is repeated near the end)...

I wonder if these feelings ever change
How many times I'll lift this load
Come tomorrow I'll be gone again
Roads of sorrows coming to an end for me...

should have been the 3rd (and last) verse only.....

(2) an entirely new 2nd verse (not so conclusive sounding) should have been composed and inserted for that original 2nd verse...

(3) the dynamic, surging chorus...

The endless crowds of faces
Just keep on wearing a smile
The countless times and places lead me back
Please take me back home...

should have been repeated after each of the 3 verses, with a double repeat after the 3rd.

(4) the haunting flute instrumental in the middle section should have been 2 or 3 times longer - and then that flute should have been used to close out the recording instead of the horns/oboe (which while normally a good choice seem out of place here).

Top 10 stuff, indeed!
