This is one of those good things-bad things kind of album. Clearly this is an attempt to capitalize on the then-new Tijuana Brass popularity that was hitting the scene, although frankly, I think this is closer to the Baja Marimba Band sound than the TJB. Some of the arrangements tend to be a bit hokey, but oftentimes the various solos save the day. The solos are very brief and get to the point. Toots Thielemans harmonica solo on "Soul Bird" is worth getting this LP alone. Clark Terry does the bulk of the trumpet solos, but Joe Newman gets in a couple of good ones himself. Bob Brookmeyer gets in a couple of good valve bone solos as well. Gary McFarland does a pretty good job on marimba, which makes me feel the BMB vibe. Overall, not too bad an album.
