Apparently a Carpenters DVD called GOLD is in the works. Yuko Ogura's latest email on the subject mentions a delay (big surprise!) in the US edition which is also delaying the Japanese edition. No other details as of yet.

There is word of another Carpenters box set, perhaps late this year. We'll have to wait and see on that one as well.

Any clue if this will be another video program like the older one I have on Laserdisc? (Wasn't that one called Yesterday Once More?)

The current Carpenters DVD is a good companion for the book, although I wish it were a little longer.

If I were a guessing man, I'd say that this proposed GOLD release on DVD would be a companion to the alleged GOLD CD release. The compilation known as GOLD has gotten released in the UK, The Netherlands, and recently Japan. UK's version from 2000 is a standard hits compilation in a lovely black and gold slipcase with a booklet with liner notes written by John Tobler.

Track listing:

Yesterday Once More
Superstar
Rainy Days And Mondays
Goodbye To Love
It's Going To Take Some Time
I Won't Last A Day Without You
For All We Know
Jambalaya (On The Bayou)
Touch Me When We're Dancing
Please Mr. Postman
I Need To Be In Love
Solitaire
We've Only Just Begun
(They Long To Be) Close To You
This Masquerade
Ticket To Ride
Top Of The World
Only Yesterday
Sing
Calling Occupants Of Interplanetary Craft

Holland's release, although confusingly called YESTERDAY ONCE MORE, has a similar track listing, but I believe is subtly changed in one track or so. Japan's release is more recent and has a white cover and contains a few tracks from the AS TIME GOES BY disc like "Rainbow Connection" thrown into the mix. So basically, in each country that it's been released, it's tailored to the tastes of its populace.

The DVD is still a big mystery. The old YESTERDAY ONCE MORE video has been released in Asia. The Hong Kong version is supposed to play in all regions. It's the same videos that we got on tape and LaserDisc back in the 80s, but adds one more to the mix, "I Need To Be in Love", arguably the best Carpenters video in that it at least attempts to tell a story related to the words of the song. It's the one that features the group leaving from an airport, and then on the plane, with both Karen & Richard "eyeing" the passersby and other passengers in search of companionship. Ironically, one of the passersby at the airport that Richard eyes is Mary Rudolph, now his wife.

My hope is that the GOLD DVD, if ever released, is a combination of both the YESTERDAY ONCE MORE videos and the INTERPRETATIONS videos. That would be nice.

If that Hong Kong DVD weren't too expensive, I'd probably get it.

CDNow lists the following:

Yesterday Once More

And they show two DVD versions available...? Under the same listing, though, with different prices. Both claim region 1 encoding, and no mention of being an import. But I take the listings with a grain of salt in these cases.

DVD Planet only shows the Remembering DVD.

The Carpenters video collection called GOLD is now listed at Amazon.com

The track listing is identical to the old YESTERDAY ONCE MORE set from the mid 80s, and the Europe/Asia ONLY YESTERDAY release in the 90s.

Release date is still holding at April 30th.

That's good...I can get this instead of looking for the old videotape I had. I remember a funky video for "Please Mr. Postman" at Disneyland (or Disneyworld...?).

It's Disneyland in Anaheim, CA. The video features Karen and Richard cavorting around Disneyland with Mickey Mouse, riding the Dumbo ride and the Disneyland railroad. Carpenters fans often point out that Richard looks extremely bored during this video shoot -- perhaps because he used to work there!

It wasn't boredom. He was watching out for the revenge of Mr. Guder. (Wasn't John Bettis in that same gig with him?)

Shoot! I always forget CDNow since it's PA-based and I end up paying 6% state sales tax when ordering through them.

Wow, that's right...you're close to Delaware. No such luck here. Ohio has, I think, a 6% sales tax like we do, and I'm sure Indiana's is similar. Illinois is the same, if not higher...I think Chicago has an added sales tax.

Ontario, Canada, is a different situation. No idea if they have a sales tax or not, but apparently if you win at the casino, or win at one of their lotto games, you don't have to pay any taxes on it. That's why Windsor's casino still advertises on the US side of the pond, since at our casinos, winnings are reported to the "guvmint." We also have the exchange rate, which sometimes works in our favor. I remember back in the early 70's when our currencies were nearly at par...

I just got one of Yuko Ogura's emails regarding the GOLD DVD. Her information is less specific than what we've already gathered from CDNow, Amazon, etc. But she does mention something about some extra footage with Richard introducing family members. We'll see about that. Word from the UK, where it's already out, is that there are NO extras. Japan release will be a little later than the US.

She also mentioned a TV program in Japan that Richard was on, singing and playing "I Need To Be In Love" from his home. She's taped it and is willing to send out a spare copy to be spread among fans. Check with Yuko about that.

Her website is at:

I just received my copy of CARPENTERS:GOLD DVD. Track listing is exactly the same as in the 1985 YESTERDAY ONCE MORE video, so no new material  However, I haven't watched it yet, because I still don't own a DVD player. I have to go and buy one now, ofcourse. So, there's a little hope, that there is extra footage, but I don't think so.

Bruno, disapointed

Hi All,
UK DVD release 22/4 , there are only John Tobler liner notes from the original 2000 UK CD issue and the running times of the separate Videos / Films as extras (interesting to compare to original songs track times).

Universal have really excelled themselves with this quick cash -in , when just some thought and a few follow ups with Richard would have provided more material and extra features!

USA / Japanese Forum regulars will have to let us know whether the extra clip with Richard / Family is added to these DVD's.

Trust Richard will release a new DVD / Video in 2003 with more material and rare footage....perhaps on MPI or another label ....just not Universal cheap skates.......

At lunch today, I picked up the Carpenters GOLD DVD. After looking yesterday in Barnes & Noble and Borders with no luck, I traveled a bit further today to Best Buy. They had it.

Since I'm not home, I can't really check it out for video and audio quality, but I can comment on the packaging. It took me all of 10 seconds looking at it to spot a typo/spelling mistake in the track listing. On the back of the DVD case, the 15 tracks are listed. There it was on the very last line:

15. (The Long To Be) Close To You

It's another goodie from the folks who gave us "Carepenters".

The track listing on the inside booklet is spelled properly, and there are two pages of small-type liner notes written by John Tobler, which look to be identical to the liner notes in the GOLD CD from the UK.

Any doubt as to how much of the Carpenter's "Gold" DVD is different from the 1985 release "Yesterday Once More" need only to look on the back on the new "gold" box. It says "copyright 1985".

Guess it's the same old collection.

Yes, it's identical to the old YESTERDAY ONCE MORE. I don't view that as a problem, since that title was never available on DVD before here in the US. It's a worthy title, and deserves to be released in the "format of the day."

Surprisingly, a holdover from that original title is the A&M Video moving logo that opens the disc. That old logo had been replaced by PolyGram's logo in recent iterations, but now it's been restored. The disc DOES open with a Universal logo as well.

Video looks clean and clear to me, revealing any weaknesses in the master of the videos themselves.

My favorite shot is the very opening one on the intro. It starts with an overview of "The Lot" with a Carpenters billboard present. Then zooms in to the round A&M Records sign with the TJB Enterprises sign below that. Neat shot.

I wish there was a way to capture the video on the computer's DVD player into a still image. I've tried every imaginable trick but just get a black screen...or just a tiny bit of the image.

8) I just received my copy of the "Gold" DVD and like everyone else I'm slightly disappointed that there are not any extras! It would be nice to see something like the making of the hits with behind the scenes recording footage. Maybe even hear some of their conversation during recording or songwriting. Or even have commentaries by Richard. I guess Universal just does not want to shell out for a superstar act who is part of the very small elite group who has sold over 100 million units.
A few titles I'd like to see on DVD: Mr. Guder, Help, A Song For You, Goodbye To Love, I Won't Last A Day Without You, It's Going To Take Sometime, Yesterday Once More, Sing, Jambalaya, I Need To Be In Love and Sweet Sweet Smile.
Regardless I'm happy to own the DVD!

This is one DVD I'll probably get, eventually. (They'll be plentiful and cheap on half.com after a few months.) I once borrowed the Yesterday Once More video on laserdisc and copied it, so having it on DVD will be an improvement for me. (And as luck would have it, when I went to find the laserdisc to purchase it, it was long out of print.)

It would have been nice to see some extras. Maybe we can hope for it next time!
