I was just goofing around on Spotify this morning and came across a Hoagy Carmichael recording of "Gonna Get A Girl"...so, being curious, I decided to give it a listen. Sho' nuff...it's the same song Herb recorded as Dore Alpert on the Dot label ca. 1961 or so. I went online and found that the song has been around since at least 1927, and has been recorded by Benny Goodman, Maurice Chevalier and Tommy Sands as well as others.
They're all good versions, but I believe Herb's take is the best...even in his early days, he was already looking for new ways to interpret classic songs.
