Heard Herb

While we were out eating in a local diner, we heard Herb's "Rise" on the music system. It was turned way down, just enough that one might be able to identify a song when the clanking of plates and glasses would subside for a minute. At first I wasn't sure - the opening loud chord is what I thought I heard first. Then silence, since this music system had little or no bass to it. Knowing how long the opening rhythm part is, I allowed the proper length of time, knowing that if it was indeed Herb's "Rise", his trumpet would pierce through the noise eventually. And right on schedule - there it was.

It served as a reminder that I haven't listened to much Herb solo material lately, other than the Montreux DVD.

...just trying to start a little conversation around here, online...

I frequently listen to these Herb Alpert solo albums: Magic Man, Rise, Fandango, Keep Your Eye on Me, Midnight Sun.

... and, I have a tough time sitting through: Just You and Me, Under A Spanish Moon, My Abstract Heart, North on South Street.

Well, couldn't you have 'em Turn It Up??!! :freak:

I remember "Rise" playing as I ate, as well as "Route 101" while I shopped...! Yes, Herb Rules the "Muzak" World!!

I've been hearing the rewhipped "Whipped Cream" quite a bit on a local radio station, KGSR. A friend of mine said he had heard "Love Potion #9" as well. At least Herb is getting some airplay.

I rememeber "A Taste Of Honey", "Tijuana Taxi" and "Lonely Bull", as well as "Rise" getting lots of airplay; at least the two AM radio stations I listen to played those songs, but nowadays it's no wonder I never have the radio on in the car anymore...

i hear some tracks from second wind playing now and again in department stores, not my favorite album, but its nice to hear herb while shopping for shoes

Last week as we dined at El Rancho, a famous restaurant on the front range of the Rockies in Colorado (it has it's own exit off of I-70!), we were treated to hearing Herb Alpert's "Killing Me Softly With His Song" from the LOST TREASURES disc playing over the restaurant's music system. (I had a buffalo burger - good stuff, low in fat!)

I'm telling you folks, KAAM radio, 770 am in Dallas, TX area plays Herb frequently. If you don't live near here, you can stream them on the web at KAAMradio.com. They regularly play: Tijuana Taxi, Spanish Flea, A Taste Of Honey, Whipped Cream, The Lonely Bull, Zorba The Greek, What Now My Love, Work Song, Flamingo, Casino Royale, A Banda, Cabaret, Tangerine, This Guy's In Love With You, Rise, and Route 101. In addition, they play a lot of Henry Mancini, Sergio Mendes & Brasil "66, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Bobby Darin, Elvis, and too many other great names to mention. In addition, during most shows, you can call 972-445-0770 and request a song and if they have it, they'll play it. You can also call or e-mail them and tell them which artists you'd like to hear more frequently.

David,
hoping to hear some of his Corner mates making requests...........

Ken Smith on XM5 has a weekly program called The Strip, where he features Vegas-oriented music. Thing is, he also uses it to sneak in a favorite song or two of his. A couple of months ago, he played a TJB track during the show, and at least once every week or two, he plays a Brasil '66 track. (Last one I heard was "Night and Day".)

Other than hearing Rise, (on my way home from the record store bringing home my copy of Coney Island) I think the one radio station I listen to that just recently changed its format, changed it so there might not be ANY Herb or Sergio (unless it'll still play Never Gonna Let You Go...)

In which case my "main station" will be the one playing "Big Band", such as its occasional reeindition of Louis Armstrong's What A Wonderful World, unless it also follows suit; just haven't heard any TjB typically played heretofore... (in either case, or in other words, the Adult Contemporary radio would play Big Band while the former Big Band radio would be playing something you only hear on the A/C Station...) :nut:

XM83 ("Chrome", the dance/disco channel) is playing "Rotation" as I write this...

That's surprising, I always thought "Chrome" was 100% fast uptempo disco. Glad to see they're mixing it up.

I play the 70s channel at work a lot, and hear both "Rise" and "Rotation" on there frequently.

Andre, our afternoon DJ, this week played a quote from Herb regarding Styx and the A&M label - on REAL radio. We subscribe to some service that provides these kind of quotes and Andre has used Herb Alpert a couple of times.

I'm still bummed they took Luna off the satellite and made it internet-only. They'd play a couple of tunes from Fandango every so often.

Chrome is uptempo mostly, but they do get by with a few mid-tempo songs that made it to 12" singles (even if they don't play the 12" version). Around 1979-1980, our local disco station, WLBS, played "Rise" quite a bit, but only spun "Rotation" a few times.

Say, Herb would be a natural for "Artist Confidential", wouldn't he? With a small combo, similar to his Montreux band, he could do a good 2 hour overview of his career.

The song: "Rise" (Of Course!! What Else??)

The place: Gormet Gardens Restaraunt, Farmington Hills, MI

The time: 7:00 PM, though after dinner on my way out...

"That's Herb!", I Shouted... "HERB ALPERT!!", I yelled out again... "C'mon, Turn It Up Louder...! A 'Rise' in that Volume...!!", my Voice continued to "Rise"... --I was wildly jumping up-and-down on the Berb Alert carpet...! Guess that's another place that plays Herb that I won't be allowed to eat at!

...Careful, Dave... ...That looks dangerously close to mentioning "Volume II..."

Yikes! :help: Sorry--Didn't wanna do that! :badteeth:

Forgot to mention what I ate there; it was quite good...:

House Special Boneless Peking Duck over Black Mushroom Sauce, Served Over White Rice

--And I paid $1.98 extra for the Potato Pancake...!

The song Route 101 is played at the beginning of a TV program called Route 101, which is transmitted on Channel 34 (from Mexico)

While in Applebee's this afternoon, I heard "Keep Your Eye On Me" on the music system.
