Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass & Other Delights: 2025 Tour

Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass & Other Delights: 2025 Tour

I guess that's a sign that the TJB has a great catalog. If this was a Chicago or Eagles board we might all be clamoring for the same 15 songs.

Just announced on Herb's Instagram account - Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass & Other Delights in concert - Masonic Temple in Detroit on March 25, pre-sale tickets starts tomorrow (October 16) 12 EST, use code APPLE

Unless artist sites have a direct link to the booking agent, they usually don't list shows in a timely manner.

Usually booking agencies handle all the details--the band or artist could only post the information they are given from the booking agency. But I just looked, and Herb's 3/25 gig is listed there. Probably just added it, I'm thinking. In my experience with a jazz group, I gave their booking agent a page in which they could log in and enter the gigs; that saved any extra steps and delays.

Looks like the March TJB date is using AXS as the ticketing agent; at least it's not Ticketmaster, but it's still a big corporation (the second largest behind Ticketmaster).

If I were able to go, I'd try to find my old Bullish tee in storage. And hope it might fit. 😁 Probably got lost in a move though, as I've never seen it since 2007.

Hard pass. AXS has a lot of ticketing complaints online (many say you only get a QR code and not a ticket). And I took a peek at the seating arrangement at the 3/25 gig and the way the promoter has the seats priced, the two aisle seats in each row, plus the front seats in the balcony, all have a $10 bump per seat. Masonic also has non-staggered seating, so it's often difficult to see the stage anyway. And the venue itself is in a seedy area where the homeless frequent, so there will be issues outside.

The real kicker? $43.16 in fees for two tickets. Here's what it would look like for two front row balcony seats:

Yeah, no. I won't be going.

If the timing works out, I'll find another city to visit. Lexington is out due to Ticketmaster handling sales; I absolutely refuse to give money to that corporation. I'll keep watching though.

It is kind of odd how the ticket industry lists their profits right there for all to see. The artist doesn't want to get the "blame" for the inflated price so they have to just put it out there.

Imagine if a car dealer had a car priced thusly:

New Ford Excavation: $89,950

If you were in the market for a new Excavation, you might buy it. But if they had it priced like this:

New Ford Excavation: $75,000
Dealer Markup: $14,950
TOTAL PRICE $89,950

You would probably at least be irritated at the dealer and it might make you say "forget it."

Anyway, back on topic -- Herb's Instagram says that a bunch more dates will be announced on Oct. 22, and another round after that, and it also says that the TJB shows will be a full band in the original TJB configuration, and will only be in 2025. Maybe this is Herb's "farewell tour?"

"original configuration" interesting! On the "Bullish" tour he had two other trumpeters, and come to think of it, in the early concert with Johnny Mathis, he had two other trumpeters. Having only one other trumpeter is going to be a lot of playing.

One other problem with the pricing is that local promoters can set any price they want and, in my experience, prices in my area are typically a lot higher than venues in surrounding states. Promoter greed is buried in the ticket price unfortunately. We're not exactly a prime market or an "artist-friendly" area.

Herb has an opportunity here to do a livestream of one of the gigs. That would be worth seeing, and a "pay-per-view" price would be a relative bargain compared to what ticket prices are these days.

I sure hope he does a video release of some sort. I'd buy that even if I don't get to one of the concerts.

Regarding your comment above about how your local venue has the "aisle seats" priced $10 above the others.... our local arena, Metrapark, is doing the same thing with a Tom Segura (comedian) show they're promoting. Aisle pairs are a full $20 higher than the seats right next to them, on both ends of each row. All this crap has been made possible by computers, algorithms and the internet. Not a good use of technology, well unless you are the promoter!

That's what I should have said--it were the pairs of end seating that got the premium pricing. Along with the front row of the balcony seating. The box seating* along the sides was very expensive.

I went back and looked last night, and noticed that some of the seats that were either already sold, or were pairs that hadn't sold that were in prime areas, are now tagged as "AXS Premium" seats, with a much higher price than what the seats were originally. 🙄 If I remember what I've read from complaints about Ticketbastard, the artists get no benefit from these premium priced seats, and I'm guessing the venue does not as well. Demand/surge pricing doesn't seem to be an issue in this case but still, I think it's disingenuous for fans to come across widely variable and constantly shifting prices in ways that do not benefit the artist directly.

I missed seeing Nik Bärtsch's Ronin early in the summer when they appeared in Cleveland; that was at a small venue--a club--and you ordered the ticket right from their site. No fees, no extras, no surprises. This is how it should be. Sadly even if I were to go to the box office of a major local venue, they still have to use the ticket seller's system to provide the tickets, so there is no way of avoiding the fees.

AXS also charges $15 to mail tickets, or $10 to have them placed in will call. Seriously?

* A memorable moment about those box seats--when Prince played there, he started his tour for the 1999 album at the Masonic Temple. At the end of the show, after he'd done the encores, he popped out onto one of the groups of box seats, carried on the shoulder of his bodyguard Chick Huntsberry (who was 6'8" and nearly 400 pounds), tossing his gloves out into the crowd. 😁

The venue in Georgia on Feb 15th, has a description of the show that must come from Herb's management...

- greetings from the north -
Martin

The text from the Lexington date's web page has some information we haven't seen yet.

- It will be a six member band (plus Herb), so looks like the same TJB configuration.
- According to a Facebook post by Herb's media team. Lani Hall will not be on these shows. (I suppose that could change.)
- The show will be 90 minutes.

Here's the complete text from their webpage. Not sure who wrote it!

2025 will be a Big Year for Herb Alpert. Herb will be 90 years old on March 31st, his classic album, “Whipped Cream & Other Delights” will be 60 years old, Herb and his wife Lani are still celebrating their marriage of 50 years and due to an out-pouring from long time fans, Herb will, for the first time in over 35 years, be touring throughout 2025 with an all new “Tijuana Brass”. All of those great hit songs and wonderful memories that we all grew up listening to will be performed by Herb and his exciting new touring band in a once in a lifetime concert tour!

This show will be an evening with, music icon Herb Alpert and his brand new Tijuana Brass. Herb along with his 6 great musicians will be playing all of your favorite Tijuana Brass hit songs just as you remember hearing them while growing up. 2025 will mark the 60th anniversary of the iconic album, “Whipped Cream & Other Delights”. Herb and the band will be performing many of those great songs in addition to many other hit songs that we all know; “The Lonely Bull”, “Spanish Flea”, “Taste of Honey”, “Mexican Shuffle”, “Tijuana Taxi”, “This Guy’s In Love With You”, “What Now My Love”, “Zorba the Greek”, “Ladyfingers”, “Rise” and many other delights. The show runs 90 minutes and is informal as Herb loves to answer questions from the audience about his career, A&M Records and the many iconic artists like Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66, The Carpenters and Burt Bacharach that he has worked with over the past 63 years. The show features a giant video screen that displays hundreds of classic photos, videos, art and various memorabilia from Herb’s music career. A really exciting show and truly a Once in a Lifetime Concert Event!

I can't imagine Lani not appearing at the shows, as she did for the mid 70s tours (and I presume, the Bullish tour as well). But she may also be sitting back for this tour and letting him do this TJB thing on his own. Given Herb's "senior" status 😉, it's probably good that she come along, even if she doesn't appear in the show.

I was just telling my editor (who lives on Long Island) about the tour, and he's interested in going. But telling him Herb's age, and how old Whipped Cream is, only made me feel...old. I remember I was a kidlet when I listened to Herbie's albums, and they were only a few years old at that point. Ouch.

The feeling that I get about Herb & Lani is that the idea of either of them traveling without the other is unthinkable. I think you can even factor out age, practicality and prudence....these two people really want to be together.

It doesn't take Herb to make me feel that.

A couple of weeks ago was the anniversary of Steely Dan's AJA. Released in 1977, so 47 years ago. Came up on Facebook, I think.

And I realized----I've been enjoying that album....for the entire span of my father's life (he died at 47 of a heart attack).

I like a lot of stuff that was created before I was born -- Jack Benny shows, Looney Tunes, certain movies, etc. It just blows me away to think that some of that stuff was made 70 or 80 or more years ago. To think that Herb's TJB albums started coming out over SIXTY years ago, is a mind-number, especially when he's still willing to go out and play the tunes!
