We try so hard to be careful..."seems to me I read somewhere"...turns out to be Herb himself.

Michael, I've had to yank foot out of mouth many times online over the past dozen or so years. :D

Great, great album. One of my TJB faves for sure.

And I've been trying to find a nice, clean p/s 45 of "Wade In The Water" for years now! The search goes on...

My favorite track is Casino Royale. I purchased my mono copy of "Sounds Like" in the late 60's.

About the Compact 33 Little LP pictured, not much thought was put into making them. About the only thing that was considered was time consideration, as you had a limit of how much material could be put on a side. Many of the Compact 33's that I have will follow the same sequence of songs, in a two to three song group, as is on the original full-length LP. The pictured Compact 33 is mostly from side 1 of the full-length LP. Possibly the one different song was used to make three songs fit on side 2 of the Compact 33.

I just checked and I found four Compact 33's in my collection: "Going Places", "South Of The Border", "Beat Of The Brass" and "Greatest Hits". All included 6 songs: "GP" has 3 charted songs, "SOTB" has 1, "BOTB" has 1 and surprisingly "GH" only has 4. All have stiff cardboard sleeves with the same picture as was on the LP's except for "GH", which was in a colored paper envelope with a monochrome copy of the LP cover printed on. All were pressed on styrene(which was A&M's favorite plastic).

"Sounds Like" is one of the truly great TJB albums. I remember getting it in the summer of 1970 at the age of 11, already the proud owner of "Going Places", "Whipped Cream" and "America" (the Karusell collection released by DGG in 1967). As a kid my favorites were "In A Little Spanish Town", "The Charmer" and "Miss Frenchy Brown", but I would never skip a track, and listened to the whole album over and over..

And that's the same story both Herb and Burt Bacharach told me individually when I interviewed them for the BBC documentary series.

I really like the 45 mix of this song. There's much more bottom to it than the album version.

I have a copy (non-PS) but it's mashed from DJ-ing so it sounds like an Alka Seltzer with Herb Alpert trapped inside it. It's on the wants list for sure...

Que? What BBC documentary series??

Spill the beans, Senor!

It is not necessarily the mix that makes the 45 versions sound sometimes better than the album versions, but it is the record speed itself. The 45rpm speed was superior in many ways to 33rpm. The faster speed allowed higher levels and consequently a more pronounced bass. Also, when mastered correctly, the 45's had the capability of higher fidelity.

Re-issue record companies, like Classic Records, have re-issued many record albums on 12", single-sided, heavy vinyl, 45rpm multi-disc sets. Classic Records has also issued single 12"-ers with the same song on each side, but one side is 45rpm and the other is 33rpm, for comparison.

It would be nice if Classic Records would give the 45rpm, multi-disc treatment to the TJB albums. Aside from the A&M albums that have been subjected to the half-speed mastering process(which diminishes and distorts the bass), a CR release may be the first time any 60's TJB albums have ever been pressed on vinyl. The common Monarch manufactured A&M albums were pressed on polystyrene.

Often times, the mixes also varied between the promotional DJ 45's and the commercial versions. The DJ 45's were compressed, EQ'd flat and run through a auto-level system, as the mono DJ 45's were mixed for AM radio which had a very limited sound range.

Now if only "Sounds Like" had the same "Big" sound quality as , say, "South of the Border" or "Whipped Cream" --- THEN we would have something.

OK, so now I feel won-over by the Roger Nichols-written "Treasure Of San Miguel"... Still don't have Sounds Like..., yet, but my Solid Brass comp serves it up well enough...

As it mentions in the Rev-O-La set of Roger Nichols Small Circle of Friends liner notes, Roger constantly played it while working at his day job/night job at the liquor store irritating the owner, while on his way to writing a hit song (and "Love So Fine" would be next...!)...

Dave seems a bit delusional here as neither SOLID BRASS nor any other compilation that I'm aware of contains the song "Treasure Of San Miguel", fine song though it is.

It must be all those late night awakenings by the new young 'un...

Awwww, it is actually, YouTube, Online, where I play it; I meant Solid Brass is where I play "Wade In The Water" & "Casino Royale", already mentioned...

Harry

And more A&M goodies from the stereo & computer (though I gotta remember where I hear what) to raise the young 'un on, we need...!

Dave :agree:

You're forgiven. We just don't want to lead some poor unsuspecting soul on a wild and expensive goose-chase, seeking out SOLID BRASS, only to find out that it DOESN'T contain "Treasure Of San Miguel".

Harry

Aw, c'mon Harry. Don't be so hard on the guy and call names. Dave has just given us a place to find the track. There are many places to find track info on most every recorded issue, like maybe the place one might buy it or sometimes even the allmusic website. A person should ask questions and investigate before a purchase, to be safe.

Well, too, we do have a Discography on the TjB (and other A&M leading lights) here as well; that can (& should) be consulted...

Never the less, point well-taken: Keep A&M Corner Wild Goose Chase-free...!

Actually Harry has prevented someone from spending huge $ for a compilation that does NOT contain the track in discussion ("Treasure of San Miguel"). Dave's post implied it could be found on the Solid Brass comp which in fact does NOT include that track. Harry's just trying to keep Dave coherent and help the less aware fans inadvertantly spend unnecessary $ on a CD for a track that CD does NOT contain. And I didn't see Harry calling anyone names -- Dave's posts routinely require two or three reads to understand what he's saying.

Hmmm. Saying someone is delusional is NOT name calling? OK. Whatever. I would have just said that Dave was mistaken, if I knew him to be in error. It's "caveat emptor" out there and if a person doesn't do their research before they buy, they may not get what they planned for. No problem understanding Harry with just one read, he was direct and to the point.

Well, as for me, then w/ Mr. Bill's comment, yeh, I DO feel insulted here...!

I think a lot of people here have a way of ramblin' & I don't know what they're saying, either, then...! But I don't complain, I've grown up; so should some of you...!

That's correct. It is not "name-calling". The word "delusional" was used as an adjective in referring to Dave's erroneous information. Dave's a longtime member here, and I felt I could get away with a little good-natured ribbing, since he just had his first child recently.

I would have just said that Dave was mistaken, if I knew him to be in error.

And that would be appropriate, given your relative "new" status to this group.

It's "caveat emptor" out there and if a person doesn't do their research before they buy, they may not get what they planned for. No problem understanding Harry with just one read, he was direct and to the point.

Always a goal.

What the "new guy" said: :| and we "old time regulars here" get pretty carried away with our needling of each other from time to time. Most of us don't take it serious and know each other well enough to know when we're ribbing each other. So for a "new guy" to "misread intent" is to be expected. Welcome to the Corner! Hope to see more posts from you in the future!
