I just picked up a wonderful album by trombonist Steve Turre called One 4 J: Paying Homage to J.J. Johnson. 8 of the 11 tunes are JJ's tunes, and Turre is joined by other trombonists in both a duet and trombone ensemble settings. The duets are similar to the K & JJ recordings, although they don't try copying the sound at all, but instead they inject their own personal sounds. The other 'bone players include Joe Alessi, Steve Davis (a favorite of mine), Robin Eubanks, Andre Hayward and Douglas Purviance. So if you like trobone albums in general, and JJ's tunes in particular, then I highly suggest this album! It's on the Telarc Label (www.telarc.com).
