You can never say that A&M didn't believe in her....they stuck by her through a lot of albums with no real hits in the US ever - was she popular in other countries?
 
She was more popular in the U.K and remains so in the female folk niche. I've always felt that when Tracy Chapman appeared out of nowhere and stormed up the charts, Joan was probably sitting there thinking "WTF? I've been doing that for years!" In fact, in my mind Tracy Chapman is "Joan Armatrading V 2.0"
