Ok, guys: Someone recently asked me this question, and my answer is apparently debatable. Now this, mind you, is something [admittedly trivial] which has been bugging me for 20 years. Ever since I read on the liner notes of Herb's 1996 album "Second Wind" that it was his 33rd album, I've been wondering what "album" I'm not counting. Because by my count, Second Wind was his 32nd album, not 33rd. And recently I remember reading somewhere that my count was off somewhere else. So it's got me wondering...
I know it's tedious, but here goes the count, titles and release dates (compilations don't count as they are not albums of newly released material):

1. The Lonely Bull (1962)
2. Volume 2 (1963)
3. South Of The Border (1964)
4. Whipped Cream & Other Delights (early 1965)
5. !! Going Places!! (late 1965)
6. What Now My Love (early 1966)
7. S.R.O. (late 1966)
8. Sounds Like... (early 1967)
9. Herb Alpert's Ninth (late 1967)
10. The Beat Of The Brass (early 1968)
11. The Christmas Album (late 1968)
12. Warm (early 1969)
13. The Brass Are Comin' (late 1969)
Greatest Hits (compilation; 1970)
14. Summertime (1971)

28. Under A Spanish Moon (1988)
29. My Abstract Heart (1989)
30. North On South St. (1991)

I think It looks pretty complete to me .

Is it possible that "Blow Your Own Horn" and "Noche De Amor" were counted as two albums, since each has two tracks that the other lacks?

I was wondering about that as well. But with the same album cover on both releases, it should be pretty obvious that it's largely the same album.

I too would guess that NOCHE DE AMOR was being counted as a full album for the purposes of that "thirty-third" count.

Official compilations I have that are not on the above list:
The Best From Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass (Dee Jay Sampler) - 1969-70
The Very Best 16 Greatest Hits (West Germany) 1986
A&M Gold Series (Japan) 1990
A&M Gold Series (Germany) 1991
A&M New Gold Series Vol. 1 (Japan) 1991
A&M New Gold Series Vol. 2 (Japan) 1991
Startrax (Australia) 1991
A Portrait In Music (Rondor - promotional) 1997
A Taste Of Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass - Catalog Sampler (Shout - promotional) 2005
A Taste Of Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass - Special Sampler Part 2 (Shout/King - promotional - Japan) 2005
The Essential Herb Alpert (UK repackaging of DEFINITIVE HITS and ANYTHING GOES) 2010 (notable for the misspelling of "Albert" on the front cover of early editions!)

I'm certain there are quite a few more from around the world, particularly in the 70s LP era that I don't have.

It's a pretty amazing list, considering how many artists who got started in the '60s are either deceased, or not putting out new music despite being alive...and some bands from the '70s wait 10 or 20 YEARS between albums. Herb has hardly ever gone more than a couple years without putting new music out, even in his "low" period in the early '70s. There were really only two longer gaps - the first was between Colors and Re-Whipped (I'm not sure whether to count Lost Treasures as a "new" album since it consists mostly of "leftovers" from old sessions, not newly-recorded music)....I have a feeling that strong sales of Definitive Hits, issued during that gap, may have sparked him to start thinking about putting out new music again). The other was between Midnight Sun and Second Wind, which was when A&M was being shut down and Almo Sounds was starting up.

He's put out five new albums in the past six years...not bad for a guy in his 80s, or 30s for that matter!

The industry has changed. Thankfully with Herb releasing albums on his own label, he can do it to any timetable he would like. With the big labels, there are all sorts of scheduling and marketing issues, and of course, indifference to the artist once that first album or two on the label has passed. Back in the 50s and 60s, two or three albums a year was not uncommon. In the 70s and part of the 80s, most pop, rock and jazz artists were doing albums about every year. (And I really enjoyed that. Waiting to see what the new year would bring for dozens of favorites.)

Then it stretched to two, three...five...even more. The big labels got to where they had to milk every album for every penny they could wring out of it, before even thinking about the next one. It's at the point now where the big labels bought each other up and somewhat imploded, and now more artists are self-releasing tracks, putting out albums whenever they feel like it, even giving tracks away. And these artists have some of the most loyal of followers. It's like things have come full circle.

Don't forget the A&M 45 single "African Summer" & the flip side "The You In Me" from 1977. Bad news, Randy "Badazz" Alpert told me on Facebook said that it will not be on "Just You And Me" as bonus tracks if it ever comes out on CD.:shake: Matt Clark Sanford, MI

Why would you count comps. of already-released material(?)...it's kinda like saying: HOT ROCKS '64-'71 is a Rolling Stones "album" (which, actually, is tallied as their best-selling)...but, a Stones' devotee would have owned 12x5 thru GET YER YA-YA'S OUT, anyhow (in a likewise situation).

Notice the compilations are NOT numbered, and I only listed the compilations because I thought somebody would say "Hey, you forgot about Four Sider" or "Solid Brass" (not knowing that they were comps).

I generally never count compilations in discographys because more often than not there are so many different kinds that have been made and are obviously
redundant
