This album has some great playing, but it will forever be a poor cousin to Joni Mitchell's MINGUS album - which is one of my favorite albums ever....

This is a groovin' little album! Recorded a few months after the death of Charles Mingus this is a collaboration of former Mingus sidemen, for the most part (obviously Charlie Haden did not play with Mingus). I get a kick out of this album just to hear the under-appreciated Jimmy Knepper on trombone (gotta love his solo on "Boogie Stop Shuffle"). It's also nice to hear Joe Farrell cut loose on tenor. As A&Mguy alluded to most of these songs first appeared on Joni Mitchell's Mingus LP, also released in 1979 (only "Boogie Stop" and "Jelly Roll Soul" weren't on that LP). Former A&M/Horizon alum Jimmy Owens contributes some fine solos as well. A strong effort overall.
