The first Petra album to feature John Schlitt on lead vocals, the 1986 album BACK TO THE STREET was a decent synth-rock follow-up to it's 1985 predecessor BEAT THE SYSTEM (A&M SP-5067). Tenor Greg X. Volz left the band, and had actually hand-picked John Schlitt personally as his successor. And overall, the album was ok. But John's voice had far more of a rocky character than that of Greg X. Volz, and the subsequent Petra album THIS MEANS WAR! raised the bar to more of a heavy metal sound for the band going forward.
Ironically, though, John's softer side was to be the more memorable sound on this album, with "Fool's Gold" and "Thankful Heart" making the Christian radio circuit and later surfacing on the Star Song compilation album PETRAPHONICS.
