What a great loss. What amazing people he worked and recorded with--truly the musical creme of the crop--Sinatra, Jobim, Sergio Mendes, Milton Nascimento, Deodato, Menescal, Donato, Astrud Gilberto, Wanda Sa, Wanderley, Desmond, Turrentine, Sylvia Telles, Johnny Alf, Ithamara Koorax etc. What a musical biography and resume from arguably Brazil's best ever drummer.

My personal favorite examples of Palma's drumming were "Day Tripper" from "Herb Alpert Presents Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66", "Triste" from "Sinatra and Friends" and last but not least "Brazil" from Jobim's "Stone Flower"--what remarkable brushwork on the drums. It's only fitting that YouTube has his last public performance just months ago performing the Ary Barroso masterpiece "Brazil" at the legendary Bottles Bar in Rio de Janeiro. See below.

Joao's, body of work and legacy on the drums will truly endure among connoisseur's of Brazilian music and jazz.
