It's amazing what a transformation a "transplant" can accomplish. The many trees that hid the grandeur and beauty of the Richard and Karen Carpenter Performing Arts Center were transplanted a short time ago to other parts of the CSULB campus. Voila. The majestic columns, soaring windows and grandeur of the theater were unveiled.
Sharing the excitement of Michele Roberge, the recently appointed executive director of the Carpenter Center at CSULB, were nearly 100 friends and community leaders as the newly renovated Carpenter Family Terrace and electronic marquee were unveiled on Sept. 18.
Having previously been all but covered by trees and shrubbery, the new terrace is a dramatic change that reveals the grandness of the building and provides an outdoor party space for hundreds while the new marquee shares all that is happening with the community.
Arriving guests were drawn to the inviting new space by live music provided by CSULB's Cole Conservatory Jazz Quintet, and treated to a lavish spread by Moon Dance Catering that featured grilled vegetable crudités, baked Brie with apricot chutney, saffron spiced shrimp with vodka cocktail sauce, chicken satay, as well as a trio of desserts.
Roberge said the terrace's new outward look symbolizes a new outlook for the Center under her tenure - one that includes greater variety, a richer caliber of art, and a stronger connection to the community. She discussed some of the events she has scheduled
for the 2008/09 season, which include a sold-out evening with storyteller Garrison Keillor, "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane, MacArthur "genius" grant recipient Elizabeth Streb's company and Jack Hanna will take the stage with dozens of exotic animals.
CSULB President F. King Alexander introduced founding donor Richard Carpenter, and thanked the Carpenter family for its continued support of the University. The Carpenter family - along with Leadership Donors Anthony Gagliardi, Mary Ellen and Bud Kilsby, John McEnulty, Joyce and George Murchison, Supervisor Don Knabe and Michele Wilson - will see their support permanently acknowledged by having their names engraved in some of the 10-foot pavers on the terrace.
The evening culminated with cheers as Richard Carpenter and family led guests across the terrace for the official lighting of the marquee on Atherton Street.
Through Classroom Connections, the Richard and Karen Carpenter Performing Arts Center at CSULB has provided programs to local elementary classrooms at no cost to the schools. For more than 10 years, this project has provided students with interactions with artists by bringing performers into local elementary classrooms.
Then students are given the opportunity to experience theater from the audience by coming into the Carpenter Center to see the artists in a finished product. To help, call 562-985-8580.
Seen at the scene: Dr. Kenia Casarreal and Judge Jacob Adajian, Art Levine, Jerry and Flora Loeb, June Murty, Tom Petrillo, Susan Rose, Harry Saltzgaver, Ronn Sarno, BJ Sherwin, Lindsay Shields-Green, Barry and Sandy Simon, Paul Garman, John and Nancy Higginson, Jean Bixby Smith, Michele Wilson, Richard Wolfsberger and Karen Wyrick.
Night at the Races
It was the seventh annual Night at the Races for the St. Mary Medical Center Guild on Aug. 9, a beautiful night at the Los Alamitos Race Course.
"The Finish Line room is a delightful setting for this event as you can see the racetrack from the windows, and we have our own private betting windows; this makes for a very relaxing and casual evening," said Martha McNaughton (there with Bob). The room looked stunning with the sage tablecloths and napkins, and a beige horse adorned with a bed of roses for the centerpiece on each table.
For $10, the 140 members and guests could purchase a balloon, pop it and hope to get one of the prizes. There were tickets to Aquarium of the Pacific, California Pizza Kitchen, Shenandoah Restaurant, Lafayette Café, Lei of Flowers, See's Candies, numerous gift certificates, cash prizes and more.
All of this seemed to have everyone occupied prior to dinner and the betting; some said it's nearly as exciting as winning a "win, place or show." On the other side of the room were the silent auction items. There were a diamond watch, flat-screen TV, a dinner cruise around the bay, Staub cookware, illustrated regional book on wine, a teapot, and a tea-party basket that included pottery dishes and cupcakes to order.
The buffet dinner consisted of tri-tip, chicken, salads, roasted vegetables and peach cobbler.
The highlight of the evening is always the $1,000 raffle; everyone wants the cash. This year's big winner was Ken Rausch, with another $500 going to Kevin Hanley and $250 to Adolfo Chanez. Once this was done, the only money left behind was whatever guests were lucky enough to win.
Seen at the scene were: Guild President Jeanne Coughlin with son Tom, Vice President Ginnie (and Lloyd) Wilcox, Helen and Bud Johnson, Rose and Joe Lozano, Bob and Carolyn Maney, Marian Cormie, Leone Landis, Lynette Rausch, Shirley and John Nyquist, Beverly Culbertson, Ginny Oleen, Joanne Cronin, Sheila and Dr. Bill Hanley, Denise Luniti, Diane Mansfield and Jerry Pennington.

Richard And Mindi will perform at a gala fundraiser on October 25
Richard Carpenter of The Carpenters singing duo and his daughter Mindi will perform on Oct. 25 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Westlake Village for a fundraiser benefiting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Conejo & Las Virgenes.
Carpenter and his wife, Mary, will preside as honorary chairs for the nonprofit's sixth annual gala dinner and auction.
"The Carpenters have been exceptionally generous to the community. We're so lucky to have them and we're thrilled to be able to honor them at our event," said Linda Catlin, gala chair.
Richard Carpenter and his sister Karen were the biggestselling group of the 1970s and one of the bestselling recording artists of all time. They recorded 20 Top 40 hits and won three Grammy awards.
Richard Carpenter wrote many of their songs. His arrangements and orchestrations of their music earned him five nominations for a Best Arrangement Grammy.
Richard and Mary Carpenter live in Thousand Oaks with their five children and were named Ventura County's Philanthropists of the Year in 2007.
"Since 1860, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America have provided a safe and secure home away from home for generations of American youth. The club at Colina Middle School is just terrific. Mary and I are delighted to be named honorary chairpersons for this year's gala, 'Stand Up For Kids,'" said Richard Carpenter.
Mindi Carpenter has been singing for most of her 16 years. She has performed at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center in Long Beach and the Fred Kavli Theatre at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza.
