I don't see many mentions of this grouping.

Was this before he signed for A&M?

I have a LP of the sextet: "Desafinado", which is quite good in a "mainstream" Brazillian kind of way.

(Contour 6870521 )

10 tracks, all instrumental, including the ubiquitous "Girl from Ipanema".

What's the English translation of "desafinado" :?:

Literally, it means..."to put out of tune".

I remember Andy Williams' version of Desafinado with the sub-title"Off Key"...the lyrics were in English[the only English versionI know of...]. The main theme was to...."Play the song with me the way it used to be...there'll be no desafinado....no more being of-key...and that's all I can remember. I don't remember the album, either, but it shouldn't be too hard to find.

I think the album discussed in that thread is the same as the "Desafinado" LP you have.

Dan, apparently the song "Desafinado" has at least three different lyrics. In addition to the original Portuguese text by Newton Mendonca, there's also the lyric by Jon Hendricks and Jessie Cavanaugh (is that the one Andy Williams did?):

Love is like a never-ending melody
Poets have compared it to a symphony
A symphony conducted by the lighting of the moon
But our song of love is slightly out of tune

Once your kisses raised me to a fever pitch
Now the orchestration doesn't seem so rich
Seems to me you've changed the tune we used to sing
Like the bossa nova, love should swing

We used to harmonize, two souls in perfect time
Now the song is diff'rent and the words don't even rhyme
'Cause you forgot the melody our hearts would always croon
And so what good's a heart that's slightly out of tune

Tune your heart to mine the way it used to be
Join with me in harmony and sing a song of loving
We're bound to get in tune again before too long
There'll be no desafinado
When your heart belongs to me completely
Then you won't be slightly out of tune
You'll sing along with me

There's also this one by Gene Lees (I think), which was the lyric Jobim recorded as a duet with Sinatra:

If you say my singing is off key, my love
You will hurt my feelings, don't you see, my love?
I wish I had an ear like yours, a voice that would behave
All I have is feeling and the voice God gave

You insist my music goes against the rules
Yes, but rules were never made for love sick fools
I wrote this little song for you, but you don't care
It's a crooked song, ah, but, all my heart is there

The thing that you would see if you would play your part
Is even if I'm out of tune I have a gentle heart
I took your picture with my trusty Rolliflex
And now all I have developed is a complex

Possibly in vain, I hope you'll weaken, oh my love
And forget those rigid rules that undermine my dream
Of a life of love and music with someone
Who'll understand
That even though I may be out of tune
When I attempt to say how much I love you
All that matters is the message that I bring which is:
My dear, one, I love you

There's also a version by Ella Fitzgerald in English. By coincidence, it played today on our nostalgia station.
