In the US, maybe, but the Muppet Show was produced in the UK and was watched by millions over here.
The 2 times the Carpenters were in the UK while the show was shooting was Nov '76 and Dec '78 (Karen alone).
In each case the Carpenters were still big in Britain; a No. 3 album A Kind of Hush having just been released in '76 and a greatest hits on the way to No. 2 in Jan '79.
A booking on the show seems fair enough.
That's a good point. Carpenters lasted longer in the UK than they did here in the U.S. I sit corrected on this one...

i was watching “Jim Henson: Idea Man” and they mentioned that they had stars asking to be on the show, they didn’t really need to go get them. “He was literally turning away the biggest movie stars in the world because he didn’t have enough episodes to put them in.” So they probably wouldn’t have been asking Karen and Richard to do the show, it probably would have had to be the other way around. Meaning their management should or could have tried to make that happen. And yes they probably would have had to go when the show wanted them to be there, too.

His book says they had to find people to appear on the show at first but that didn’t last long at all. The show had been rejected out of hand stateside but Lord Grade bankrolled and made it happen. It exploded in popularity everywhere it aired and VERY quickly as you said, stars were beating down their doors to appear on the show. No one saw that coming.

By the way, Henson’s book is fascinating and HIGHLY recommended. He’s MUCH more than just “the Muppet guy.”
