I know it has probably been discussed here already, but I picked up the Smokey Robinson "Smoke Signals" album to hear Herb Alpert's work on the song Te Quiero.. and it was the strongest sound Herb has had in decades. It is an '86 release. The arrangement reminded me of TJBV2 and South of the Border. A classic cut that should be heard by all Herb fans.

We had just recently discussed a bit about the Smoke Signals album over in the Carpenters forum, since Richard Carpenter and bandmate Tony Peluso also contributed to Smokey's album.

For those who haven't heard the track, here's the musican line-up on "Te Quiero Como Si No Hubiera Un Mañana":

Herb Alpert - Trumpet Solo
Calvin Davis - Alto Sax
Michael Jacobsen - Tenor Sax
Fred Smith - Tenor Sax
Michael Boddicker - Synthesizers
Paul Jackson, Jr. - Guitar
John Robinson - Drums
Neil Stubenhaus - Bass
John Hobbs - Piano
Robbie Buchanan - Synthesizer solo
Tony Peluso - Additional Synthesizers
Paulinho da Costa - Percussion
Steve Barri - Additional Percussion
Background Vocals - Ivory Stone, Brenda Eager & Patricia Henley

Apparently Smokey's fans aren't too fond of this album. The story goes that Mr. Robinson was "not quite with it" during the recording sessions, to use a euphemism.
