Just out of curiosity, who on this board had the good fortune of attending one of the concerts on the BULLISH promotional tour back in 1984. I was only four when that occured and my dad, who has been a Herb Alpert fan since LONELY BULL never went to a show of the BULLISH tour since the group was not playing in our area. As a fan myself, I'm just curious about what this particular tour generated and was it as big a success as the tours the TJB did in the '60s? I know that the BULLISH album did not do critically or commercially well, but we do have the record and like it very much. What songs were played on the tour? Was it all strictly tunes from the record or were some old favorites thrown in as well? Also, are there any known photos of the group at the time other than that fabulous one with Herb Alpert, Julius Wechter, John Pisano and the late Nick Ceroli (without his famous "Viva Zapata" moustache)?

The BULLISH tour was a very short one - maybe 15 or 20 cities. It was the Olympic committee who had asked Herb to put together a TJB concert for the Olympic athletes (the Olympics were in L.A. in 1984), and he decided to do a brief tour to promote the album. Lani was also on the tour. The song list I have includes:

The Lonely Bull
Spanish Flea
Route 101
TJB Medley (Casino Royale/Mexican Shuffle/The Work Song/Whipped Cream/What Now My Love/Tijuana Taxi)
Bullish
Push And Pull
Come What May (Lani & Herb)
Brasil '66 Medley (Fool On The Hill/Look Of Love/Mas Que Nada) (Lani with a trio rhythm section)
Misty Blue (Lani)
The Bebop Song (Lani)
This Guy's In Love With You
Make A Wish
A Taste Of Honey
Rise
Zorba The Greek
Fandango
Struttin' On Five

I suppose the song list could have varied from city to city, but this is what I have. I don't know what kind of revenue the tour earned, but it was probably somewhat small, since it was a rather short tour.

Hi!

I have many photos from the Bullish concert at The Garden States Arts Center in New Jersey. Perhaps Neil could get them posted for us???

I have fond memories of the Bullish Tour...it has been the only time[so far, at least...] that I've been able to see Herb live. The venue was IUPUI/Indianapolis in july of '84. The group was in top form, Nick Ceroli was playing the drums for what would turn out to be one of the last times, sadly...and John Pisano, Julius Wechter and Bob Edmondson rounded out the original Brass members. Bob Findlay played trumpet and John Pattitucci was featured, also...I don't remember if Dave Frishberg was there or not[I didn't get a program]. It rained buckets all day and into the evening...the concert was delayed while crews tried to squeegee-off the stage- Herb had to dodge a big puddle they couldn't dry up when he took the microphone...almost falling on his brass...but hewas gracious bout the whole affair, and told us that if we wanted to dance in the aisles or anything like that, it was okay with him, because we'd waited for them to perform[nobody did...]

The songlist was similar to the one the Cap'n posted, the only real changes I remember were that they played"Always Have A Dream" and dedicated it to the Colts[ I wonder if he saw last Sunday's game against Denver...]; and "Fandango" was the encore with an artist painting a caracture of Herb on a black background furiously as the song played out.

It was a fantastic experience, one that I'll never forget, even if my date DID get drunk and pass out in the car on the way home...at least she didn't throw up all over my leather seats...

Dan, remembering maidens, Miradas and mariachis on-line....

The TJB Lineup consisted of:

Herb Alpert - trumpet
Bob Findley - trumpet, flugelhorn and flugelbone
Ken Kaplan - trumpet and synthesizer
Bob Edmondson - trombone, percussion
Sal Macaluso - keyboards
John Pisano - guitar
Jimmy Imperial - guitar
John Patitucci - bass
Julius Wechter - marimba, percussion
Nick Ceroli - drums

There's more about the band at the TJB discography on this site.

At least your camera didn't get confiscated at this concert, eh? :D

In Joisey, there are always other things to worry about...

I cannot believe that no one made at least an audience recording of one of these concerts! Would be defionitely interesting to listen to it now.

Herb made a stop at Poplar Creek outdoor theatre in Hoffmann Estates, Illinois with the Bullish tour. The Chicago Suburb venue has since been demolished.

I, too, remember that artist. That was quite a nice touch painting a portrait of Herb in the time it took to play "Fandango".

I wanna say that Julius was featured on "Sunrise, Sunset". But I could be wrong. They did play a little "Coney Island" to intro Julius. It was great seeing him and Ceroli for what , for me, would be the last time.

There was a good program book sold for the concert, it had lots of good photos. By the way, Ceroli played on some Bob Florence big band records.

That's right. I think he played Lani on stage with it. It was a lovely concert. Good weather. Enthusiastic crowd. You hate to see something like that end. Herb always seems to be having such a good time up there. It's infectious. :) :)
