Just to add a little to my comments above - there are still a handful of labels who mail out promo discs, all of them very small specialist labels who know their target market. Otherwise the Sonys of this world send a file download link rather than a promo disc. In the last fortnight Sony have sent me the new Noel Gallagher album (one track might get one play but that's about all) and the latest Dylan CD (which, IMHO is absolutely atrocious. But what do I know?). Every week I'm sent 40 - 80 mp3 downloads but the real surprise is when I get a piece of promotional vinyl. Only two in the last 18 months, though!

Cassettes have returned with a cult following, but I think it is more among hipsters than anyone else--there is nothing sonically superior nor convenient about cassettes.

It would not surprise me to see an independent label send a cassette as a promo piece. Thing is, most who receive it will have no way to play it. I don't even have my cassette deck connected anymore, although I try to run it occasionally to keep everything moving.

I do see how MP3s could be a better vehicle for promotionals, though. No cost to produce, and if they keep the bitrate low enough (or embed DRM data), it'll discourage uploading them to the "sharing" sites.

I Agree Captain. I had all my vinyl transferred to CDR Years ago Thanks to a Good friend who had Good computer software. A Good Turntable. And my VG condition LPS I have never been disappointed with the results. Even when i briefly had a turntable a few years ago. I Got stellar results. So in the case of my Herb Alpert Lps that remain unreleased on cds and all my Baja Marimba Band LPS I am very glad i took care of them over the years. They still sound Beautiful and probably EVEN BETTER Than perhaps any purported cd or Mp3 download of these that may be floating out there.

Old mono records *should* be played with a 1-MIL tip stylus (as opposed to .7-mil for stereo) to extract the most signal from them. The (thinner) stereo stylus will tend to pickup more surface noise.
