then this song appears to be the direction Richard Carpenter was heading.

It sounds like he had every intention of finishing this song off properly and releasing it on a future album, had Karen lived.

Maybe he wanted a stronger vocal read! My heart still breaks that it ended this way. They even had to intubate Karen according to Randy’s book, in that last hour. A very sad end to a bright beginning. Anorexia took it all. Thankfully Richard took great steps for quality recordings that are rightfully treasured to this day and we can still hear this beautiful voice and understand it for listening pleasure. VOTH is properly titled.

I agree, it's very apt and a nice tribute to Karen. The dedication on the back cover still gets me to this day.

"Now" is a Song I can rarely listen to, because it always makes me cry. I love it anyway.
