Words to the Little Spanish Flea

Oh, boy. This is testing my memory -- but here goes. Didn't Homer Simpson sing this once on "The Simpsons"?

SPANISH FLEA

There was a little Spanish Flea
A record star he thought he'd be
He'd heard of groups like The Beatles, the Chipmunks he'd seen on TV --
Why not a little Spanish Flea? And so he hid
Atop a doggie from Madrid
Arriving here in the city, still singing his sweet harmony
A lonely little Spanish Flea (music break)

(Can't remember the words to the first chorus...Then back to melody:)

Then all at once he met the man
Who led the Tijuana Brass...

(More about the Flea impressing Herb Alpert here...memory is foggy! Ack!)

(Then the chorus again -- Herb speaking:)

"You'll be the rage! I'll put you on the stage!
You'll be on top of a shiny horn!
Well, at a glance he knew this was his chance
And all at once a Spanish star was born!

And when the people heard him play
They all began to shout "Ole!"
He was the pride of the nation, a singing sensation was he --
Though he was just a Spanish Flea.

(I HAVE all these words somewhere in an old songbook -- actually, it's surprising how many of the old TJB songs have lyrics. "A Quiet Tear" is an especially lovely one..."Tijuana Taxi" is just as goofy as "Spanish Flea," but fun!) Man, talk about trivia!! :) Mary

Hi Mary,

It seems you have a very good memory for lyrics.
Do you perhaps know the words of "A Quiet Tear"?
I would be very greatful !

If you know the words and have some time...
Thank you !

OK, Antonio --
I chased down the lyrics for both "Spanish Flea" and "A Quiet Tear," so you don't have to rely on my memory. These lyrics are listed in the songbook "Seleccionados: 111 Songs With Music, Lyrics and Chord Symbols" (unfortunately the cover is missing and I don't have the publication date, but all the tunes in the book are all Irving/Almo songs circa 1962-66):

SPANISH FLEA (Cissy Wechter and Julius Wechter)
There was a little Spanish flea
A record star he thought he'd be
He'd heard of groups like The Beatles, the Chipmunks he'd seen on TV --
Why not a little Spanish flea?

And so he hid
Inside a doggie from Madrid
Arriving here in the city still singing his sweet harmony
As brave as any flea could be!

He walked around as if he owned the town, humming his pint-sized melody
With his guitar, he knew he'd be a star -- and in his old home town how proud they'd be!

Then all at once he met a man
Who said "I'll help you if I can" --
He listened first to his song, then he sang right along, for you see
He loved the little Spanish flea!

(ALTERNATE Lyric to the above -- sung on a '60s TV show that I remember: "Then all at once he met the man
Who led the Tijuana Brass..." -- and then in following lyric: "You'll be the rage! I'll put you on the stage - you'll be on top of a shiny horn!")

"You'll be the rage! I'll put you on the stage in costumes like you've never worn!"
Well, at a glance, he knew this was his chance, and all at once a Spanish star was born.

And when the people heard him play
They all began to shout "Ole!"
He was the pride of the nation, a singing sensation was he --
Though he was just a Spanish flea.

__________

A QUIET TEAR (Herb Alpert and Johnny Flamingo)
Night after night in Pepito's Cantina you'll find me
Making believe I'm the happiest girl in Juarez
I'm ordering wine for the crowd
And I laugh much too loud
But inside, my heart's bowed with a tear
Just one quiet tear.

One quiet tear that flows on like the loneliest river
One quiet tear for the love you have taken away
With somebody new, I pretend
Broken hearts always mend
Just a clown to the end, with a tear
Just one quiet tear.

One quiet tear for the dreams that I dreamed were all mine, dear...
One quiet tear for the kiss that was sweeter than wine, dear...
One quiet tear for the love that was truly divine, dear... (FADE OUT).

I know Peggy Lee wrote words to "So What's New" but didn't she write lyrics to Spanish Flea? No, check that, I'm probably wrong again.

The lyrics are attributed to Cissy Wechter, Julius' wife.

OK, we'll cancel Peggy's royalty checks. I'm off for a three day weekend of my own special brand of liquid grief counseling. Have a nice weekend

What's this that I'm seeing about 'Spanish Fly'...isn't is a bit risqué for the 'Corner', and not only that, but from what I'd heard, it's dangerous. If things continue this way, we'll be seeing banner ads for Phizer's flagship, or is that flagpole drug Viagra, which is advertised on the telly during newstime...hmmmm, have the times achanged, or what?
Warm Wishes,
Steve, who after a big ol' swig of hookah, imagines licking all of that choles'rol from Delores...'tis them 'other delights' y'know!

The more that I change, the more that I stay the same

yes, there are those official words by cissy...
some recordings change the words as you might
imagine...i think for example the modernaires vocal
uses different words...then, allen sherman did a
spanish flea parody thats really dumb with his
own lyrics...
