Not asking for personal favorite tunes here, just sort of an A&M fan test. I'll start with a few examples: Carpenters (in my opinion) would be "Close to You", Herb Alpert & the TJB might be "Spanish Flea", Nazareth: "Love Hurts", etc.
Let's try one song per act per member.

TJB: The Lonely Bull

Baja: Along Comes Mary... :D

Claudine Longet: Here, There And Everywhere...

We Five: You Were On My Mind

Sandpipers: Guantanamera

Lucille Starr: The French Song

Carpenters: It's Going To Take Some Time

Sergio: Fool On The Hill

Cat: Morning Has Broken

Sandy: Who Knows Where The Time Goes

Fairport: A Sailor's Life

Boyce & Hart: Alice Long(where IS that stereo masters?!?)

Police: Every Breath You Take

Squeeze: Hour-Glass

:ed:

I agree with a lot of those Ed, but for Cat Stevens I would pick "Wild World", and with Squeeze I think of "Tempted". Very interesting.

Sergio Mendes has to be "Mas Que Nada".

For Claudine I'd suggest "Hello, Hello", as it was the closest thing she had to chart hit.

Harry

TJB: Tijuana Taxi

Herb Alpert (solo): Rise

Sergio Mendes: Mas Que Nada

Carpenters: We've Only Just Begun

Cat Stevens: Peace Train

Rita Coolidge: (Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher and Higher

Captain & Tennille: Love Will Keep Us Together

Peter Frampton: Baby I Love Your Way (live)

Styx: Babe

Supertramp: Logical Song

The Police: Every Breath You Take

Bryan Adams: Summer of '69

Amy Grant: Baby Baby

Chuck Mangione: Feels So Good

Gino Vanelli: Wheels Of Life

Let's see . . .

Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass : "Taste Of Honey"

Herb Alpert (as vocalist) : "This Guy's In Love With You"

Chris Montez : "There Will Never Be Another You"

Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 : "The Look Of Love"

Rita Coolidge : "We're All Alone"

Stealers Wheel : "Stuck In The Middle With You"

Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart : "I Wonder What She's Doing Tonight" (Note: original spelling; last word changed to Tonite when the LP that featured it came out)

Sonny Charles (and The Checkmates, Ltd.) : "Black Pearl"

Peter Frampton : "Show Me The Way" (Live Version)

L T D : "(Every Time I Turn Around) Back In Love Again"

Procol Harum : "Conquistador"

Gino Vannelli : "I Just Wanna Stop"

Otherwise, I mostly concur with the rest of youse. And if I think of more, I'll speak up . . .

I'd have to say that BMB's was "Riders In The Sky".
I feel that Herb's is "Taste Of Honey".
Even though it was on Deram, I don't think Procol Harum's could be anything but "Whiter Shade Of Pale".
Billy Preston: "Nothin' From Nothin' "
Head East: "Never Been Any Reason"
38 Special: "Rockin' Into The Night"
Peter Frampton: "Baby I Love Your Way"
Amy Grant: "El Shaddai"
Sandpipers: "Guantanamera"
Wes Montgomery: "Windy"
Sergio Mendes: "Mas Que Nada"
Nazareth: "Hair Of The Dog"
Phil Ochs: "Outside A Small Circle Of Friends"
Falco: "Rock Me Amadeus"
Claudine Longet: "Sleep Safe & Warm"
Chuck Mangione: "Feels So Good"
Supertramp: "Give A Little Bit"
Carpenters: "We've Only Just Begun"
Captain & Tennille: "Love Will Keep Us Together"
We Five: "You Were On My Mind"
Lucille Starr: "The French Song"
Cat Stevens: "Peace Train"
Boyce & Hart: "I Wonder What She's Doing Tonight"
Police: "Every Breath You Take"
Sting: "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free"
Squeeze: "Tempted"
Rita Coolidge: "Higher and Higher"
Styx: "Come Sail Away"
Bryan Adams: "Cuts Like A Knife"
Gino Vannelli: "People Gotta Move"
Chris Montez: "Call Me"
Stealers Wheel: "Stuck In The Middle With You"
Sonny Charles: "Black Pearl"
Brothers Johnson: "Strawberry Letter #23"
LTD "Back In Love Again"
Quincy Jones: "Killer Joe"

Though that song was re-issued on 45 by A&M in late 1972 (AM-1389). But I was thinking of their signature during their A&M run (the live version, B.T.W.), thus above.

But here are some more signatures (I.M.H.O.) . . .

Billy Preston : Instrumental - "Outa-Space"; Vocal - "Nothing From Nothing"

Styx : "Babe"

Janet Jackson : "When I Think Of You"

Bell & James : "Livin' It Up (Friday Night)"

Ozark Mountain Daredevils : "Jackie Blue"

Amy Grant : "That's What Love Is For"

Joe Cocker : "Feeling Alright"

Bryan Adams : "Heaven"

Free : "All Right Now"

Jeffrey Osborne : "On The Wings Of Love"

Lee Michaels : "Do You Know What I Mean"

Quincy Jones (Featuring James Ingram) : "Just Once"

Jimmy Cliff : "Wonderful World, Beautiful People"

Wow...I'm going to have to give this one some thought! A lot of good choices already. :)

OK, this is subject to change, but I'll shoot this one in here before I head out the door. I'm undecided on one or two entries, but otherwise, it's pretty clear cut.

To me, "signature song" means a song that, the second you hear it, you identify it with the artist or band. As if they had only recorded one song, this would be the one they're forever identified with. (And as a result, my picks are a bit obvious, but that's the nature of the beast.) So here goes!

Herb & The TJB: Taste of Honey
Solo Herb: Rise
Procol Harum: Whiter Shade of Pale (even if it wAS a licensed album)
Peter Frampton: Show Me The Way (a classic rock staple)
Sandpipers: Guantanamera (is this unanimous or what?? :D )
Wes Montgomery: Road Song
Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66: Mas Que Nada
Sergio Mendes: Never Gonna Let You Go
Nazareth: Hair Of The Dog ("ain't no messin' with the..." )
Chuck Mangione: Feels So Good
Supertramp: Logical Song
Carpenters: We've Only Just Begun (a very iconic song, don't you think?)
Captain & Tenille: Love Will Keep Us Together
We Five: You Were On MY Mind
Police: Message In A Bottle
Sting: If You Love Sombondy
Styx: Come Sail Away
Gino Vannelli: I Just Wanna Stop
Chris Montez: Call Me
Bros. Johnsons: Stomp!
Baja Marimba Band: Georgy Girl
Roger Nichols: Love So Fine
Janet Jackson: What Have You Done For Me Lately?
Bell & James: Livin' It Up (Friday Night) (or file this under "one hit wonder" :D )
Oingo Boingo: Only A Lad
Burt Bacharach (among his own A&M recordings): Wives and Lovers
Bob Regan/Lucille Starr: We're Gonna Stand Up On The Mountain
Cat Stevens: Morning Has Broken
Billy Preston: Will It Go 'Round In Circles
Joe Cocker: With A Little Help From My Friends (or You Are So Beautiful)
Tamba 4: Dolphin (one of Luiz Eça's finest and most recognized tunes)
A.C. Jobim: Wave

When I did mine this afternoon, I was doing it on the fly, missed a few acts, I see! :badteeth: Time to rectify that...

The only omissions I made were of jazz cats like Wes and Jobim, whose best work, I feel, was done elsewhere...and of course I'm ignoring the minor acts or those I've no use for, but that's just the contrarian in me...

Mo:

Montez: Call Me

Procol: A Salty Dog(live '72)

Brothers J: S Letter 23

Styx: Lorelei

Supertramp: Logical Song

Frampton: Do You Feel Like We Do(live)

Armatrading: The Weakness In Me(great, great record! How did this NOT become a hit?!?)

One-shots:

Diddy Wah Diddy--Captain Beefheart :D
Livin' It Up--Bell & James:cool:
A Song Of Joy--Miguel Rios
Run Home Girl--Sad Cafe

I'm sure there will be more to come, there usually is!

:ed:

Wow! This is about the best topic we've had in the last few months. Good job, Chatsworth Steve, for coming up with it...

Before I jump into my list I think I should point out that A&M licensees in many thrid world countries did this very thing. I am the proud owner of a 5 volume Philippine set and have seen Mexican and Japanese sets that are similar. Mendes, Sergio & B66 "Ma(i)s Que Nada"
Tamba 4 "The Dolphin" ("I e Manja" a close 2nd)

These two entries courtesy of A&M's proofreading  department. Why they perpetuated the incorrect "Mais Que Nada" is a mystery. And "Iemanja" is all one word (or name, as the case may be). Amazon even had it listed as "Lemanja" :shake: ...incidentally, e-mailed them last night to fix the entry.

I forgot one in my list:

Joe Jackson: "Is She Really Going Out With Him?"

And a few more . . .

Peter Allen : "Fly Away"

Pablo Cruise : "Love Will Find A Way"

Barry White : "Practice What You Preach" (of the A&M years)

Kris Kristofferson & Rita Coolidge : "A Song I'd Like To Sing"

Baja Marimba Band: "Flyin' High"
Wall Of Voodoo: "Mexican Radio" (IRS)
Joe Jackson: "Stepping Out"
Lee Michaels: "Do You Know What I Mean?"
Phil Ochs: "Cross My Heart"
Herb Alpert solo: "Rise"
Chuck Mangione: "Feels So Good"
Procol Harum: "Conquistador"
Styx: "Mr Robato" ( a dark horse "signature" song- but has become kind of an anthem.)
Gino Vannelli: "I Just Wanna Stop"
Tamba 4: "The Dolphin"
Falco: "Vienna Calling"
Billy Preston: "Nothin' From Nothin' "
Stealer's Wheel: "Stuck In The Middle With You"
Gallagher & Lyle "Breakaway"
Roger Nichols: "Don't Take Your Time"
Ayers Rock: "Lady Montego"
Bryan Adams: "Run to You"
Alarm: "The Stand" (IRS) (Come on down, come on down...)
Supertramp:"The Logical Song" (but "School" is better.)
Split Enz: "Dirty Creature" (no, not about my ex wife.)
Ozark Mountain Daredevils: "If You Wanna Get To Heaven"
38 Special "Hold on Loosly"
Sheryl Crow: "All I Wanna Do"
Double: "The Captain of Her Heart"
......setting # of edits record at the Corner

Just going with the way they're listed on my vinyl!

I used to own the reel of the Tamba 4...I believe it may have been spelled correctly there. Don't quote me on it though.

Did Shawn Phillips' "Lost Horizon" appear on an A&M recording? I know it from the Columbia Pictures soundtrack on Bell.

Harry
...wondering, online...

Yes, Harry. Shawn Phillips actually recorded it on a '45' (A&M 1405) as a B-Side of "Landscape", from his Faces LP; (A&M SP 4363).

I have seen and played a little of it on a Double-Sided W/L Promo I saw at one of my record haunts, recently.

...helping Harry, online...

Lani Hall: Theme from "Never Say Never".
....just realizing Herb and Lani both did James Bond film scores! (Herb and the TJB- "Casino Royale").
(never seen a Bond film though!!!)
